Anastasia state park and St Augustine

The fort is good. The Mill Top for a sandwich, adult beverage, and Florida Folk music. The rest of old town is pretty much tourist trap stuff.

Go to the Fort about 3:00 and hope to get a spot in the parking lot by the fort. Pay for only two hours as the meters are only enforced until then. You would be surprised at the folks who put money in when not needed. This gives you up to two hours to visit the fort, but you probably only need one.

After that, walk over to town without moving your vehicle as you won't find a better spot. If you like Italian, highly recommend Pizzalley's Chianti Room (not the little eatery on St George street). Food is absolutely excellent and very well priced. We ordered lasagna and sausage calzone. Meals were so big we ate about 1/4 of the lasagna and the calzone. What was left of the lasagna was enough for the next nights meal.

We enjoyed taking the train tour around town. It gives you an idea of where things are and also some of the history. Your ticket is good all day and you can get off as you wish. We rode it the entire way and then decided what we wanted to explore. We had lunch or coffee and set out again.

There are lots of tourist traps for sure. Pick up various tourist publications and take advantage of some of the coupons available. I think we got free parking with the purchase of our train tickets.

Kingfish Grill is a pretty good hole-in-the-wall place for seafood and drinks. It is at the western foot of the bridge over the Tolamato River on A1A. Try to get there a bit before the sun goes down and get a table outside. Nice views.

We have dined at Gypsy Cab Company many times. Always good and consistent.

Osteens if you like fried shrimp. Probably be a line but they turn tables around quickly. Very good red chowder.

We are from Orlando and have been visiting St. Augustine twice a year for the past twenty years. We have stayed at Bed & Breakfast, hotels and campgrounds. After doing all the attractions and sampled all the restaurants, our favorite thing to do is free, walk all the little streets and enjoy the views. We have trully enjoyed each and every visit.

I enjoyed going to the lighthouse and maritime museum on Anastasia Island.

I was a volunteer guide at the Castillo de San Marcos, the old fortress downtown. It's a splendid example of Italian style bastioned artillery fortification with an intact glacis and covered way, a fine ditch and a ravelin. The mission of Nombre de Dios north of the fort was founded in 1565 and has a nice museum, gorgeous grounds and besides being genuine is free. The Alligator Farm on the south end of town is fun and historically significant as an example of pre Disney Mom and Pop Florida tourism. Most of the restaurants are so-so and interchangeable though there are pretty decent little Cuban and Brazilian joints on Aviles Street south of the town square.

Check out Mi Casa on St. George Street for a cold drink and live music. Usually pretty good acoustic performers. Tini Martini is the place to go for martini's.
Alligator Farm is pretty cool as is the Ripley's Museum. The segway tour that runs out of the Fountain of Youth park is also very fun and easy. You get a great tour of town.

Take the trolley tour. You can park your car at the jail and take it from there. Do the distillery tour and ask to sample the gin they make - ask for it neat. They also have a winery tour with sampling afterwards. I'm not much of a fan of their wine, but others like it. You can get off the trolley at both places. Near the disilery, there is a nice restaurant called The Icehouse - think it's part of the distillery come to think of it.

Not knocking Anastasia, but North Beach Resort is much better - check it out for future trips - huge private sites with full hookups. There are some nice restaurants in that area on the inter coastal - Caps and Aunt Kates. It will be cool enough to dine on the outside decks.

If your in shape, climb the stairs at the lighthouse for a great view, but at least tour the museum.

Don't remember the name of this place, but there is a seafood restaurant at the end of a pier by the bridge of lions. It's awful - don't go.
