Big Bend campgrounds closed

Wildfires have crossed the Rio Grande here and the Castolon and Cottonwood campgrounds are closed. Several historic buildings have been lost. Anyone currently at Big Bend?
  • We’re planning to be there for a few days around June 10 to celebrate our 41st anniversary. The only night of our honeymoon spent under a roof was in one of the CCC built stone cottages there; the rest were in a VW bus. Sorry to hear of the damage at Castolon, my grandfather owned a Gulf service station and the big orange and blue sign there always reminded me of him.

Castolon is the Visitor's Center, the campground is Cottonwood; there is no actual campground called Castolon. (seems just a grammatical oops by the OP). Good news is Los Diablos are on scene so hopefully it will get extinguished soon.

Sorry about the typo.... no campground at Castolon.....

The news article says "Due to a fire in the Castolon area, the following closures are in effect: - Castolon is closed - Cottonwood Campground Closed - River Road West from Buenos Aires to Castolon Closed. - The Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is open only to Mile 22."
  • Oh dear, how sad We were planning on heading that way next winter. Will have to keep our finger crossed that it opens.
