Black Beach or Onyx Beach, Minnesota

Looking for any and all info on Black Beach or Onyx Beach, Minnesota, slightly north of Silver Bay. As I understand it is recently open to the public. Is this State, Federal or what operated? I can't find if there is an admission fee or not and where is the best place to see and walk this area?
We plan on being there in early September and want to take in as many sights as we can. If you know of more, please also post them, with directions.

thanks
  • Thanks a bunch for the info. Guess Sept can get chilly up there.

    thanks again!
  • Well marked. There’s a sign that’s brown and white typical for parks. Follow the signs once you turn. You don’t want to park in the first lot for parking. Go to the second lot where the bathrooms are.

There was alot of road construction when we were there. Hopefully they’re finished when you are there. The crews get you through quickly all things considered.

Bring cold weather gear with in case the east winds come in.
  • How hard is it to find? Well marked or followed GPS coordinates?
  • The scenery is awesome! Well worth the stop. Unfortunately it was 50* at the water with 15 mph winds but it’s very beautiful.
  • We’re going today. It’s open to the public but not available for camping. Planning stages at the moment. The mining company leases it to the city.

The kids can bum around and take pics. Might hit 60* today. Drastic weather change from the forecast one week ago.
  • We’re up here now. If we stop at Black Beach I’ll let you know. Been past it a few times already.
