Black Beach or Onyx Beach, Minnesota

Question

Looking for any and all info on Black Beach or Onyx Beach, Minnesota, slightly north of Silver Bay. As I understand it is recently open to the public. Is this State, Federal or what operated? I can't find if there is an admission fee or not and where is the best place to see and walk this area?
We plan on being there in early September and want to take in as many sights as we can. If you know of more, please also post them, with directions.

No camping yet, the Gov. just signed an appropriations bill to fund it. http://www.silverbay.com/?p=3283

Here's an older article about it. Sounds like it is operated by the city of Silver Bay. Nothing about it on the city website, however. Probably not much in the way of improvements there yet, if they have been waiting for funding, so likely also no admission, etc.

We’re going today. It’s open to the public but not available for camping. Planning stages at the moment. The mining company leases it to the city.

The kids can bum around and take pics. Might hit 60* today. Drastic weather change from the forecast one week ago.

The scenery is awesome! Well worth the stop. Unfortunately it was 50* at the water with 15 mph winds but it’s very beautiful.
