Campground for day trips to South Padre Island

Question

After quite a bit of research, we have decided not to stay at any of the campgrounds on SPI. None of them sound at all desirable to us.

Do any of you have any recommendations for campgrounds on the mainland close enough for day trips to the island? We don't need fancy, but would like something better than those on the island.

One we are looking at is Palmdale RV Resort at Los Fresnos. Anyone have any experience with this one?

Stayed at Honeydale Rv park and Rod and Reel Rv park each for a winter season.

Go up to Rockport - much, much nicer and less wind and do North Padre Island.
