Campgrounds in Pittsburgh

If you camp at the KOA you can take the subway from Upper St.Clair to downtown and avoid some of the traffic and parking hassles.

From Mountain Top, you could get on the subway at Fox Chapel.

No one has mentioned it yet, so I will: Parking in downtown PGH is a nightmare. Avoid it if you can.

We checked out Mountain Top a few years ago looked like a nice park. If I remember it was pretty close to RT. 28 which will take you right into the Burgh.

Thanks for the info that's the things we are looking for.

If you stay at Fox Den and want to go to Dick's, take the turnpike west to Monroeville, then head toward Murraysville on Rt 22. IIRC, Dicks is about 5 miles from the turnpike exit.

You can get there on non-toll roads (2-lanes, lots of curves and hills), but the pike is much faster.

I grew up in Monroeville next to Murraysville and we went to Dick's Diner all the time. The pies alone are worth the trip.

We like Fox Den in New Stanto also, it's about 35 miles from Pittsburgh. We are planning to stay there again this year to go to Kennywood and also maybe hit a place to eat that was featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives just not sure which one (any ideas)

We feel that both the Madison and Washington KOAs are terrible and so so expensive. The sites are narrow and unlevel with lots of seasonals. Now, if we have to be in the area, we stay at Fox Den in Staunton. Just our opinion.

We are going to visit relatives in Pittsburgh (right by Carnegie Mellon University) later in the week, heading up from Florida. Our route will be I-77 to US 19 to I-79 to Pittsburgh, and then will be heading east and home to Boston.

We will unhitch our SUV to drive in and out of Pittsburgh. Can someone suggest a campground or park that would be convenient to “commute” from? Other things equal, east of the city is better, as that is the direction we will head out.

As long as there is water to fill our tanks and a dump station, we don’t need much in the way of amenities (though hookups are always welcome!)

Washington/Pittsburgh KOA seems to have a good location but seems to get very unenthusiastic reviews. Would be nice to find something a little nicer.
