Campgrounds near Boone, NC

This fall we'll spend about a month in Boone, NC. Does anyone have experience with some of the local campgrounds? Please list campground names and pros and cons from your experience.

You will like it there, beautiful in October

You all were correct, there are NO campsites left in Boone; at least not for the entire month of October. The closest I could get is Raccoon Holler in Jefferson. That is a 32 minute drive from my son's house in Boone. Next time we'll make the reservation much earlier.

Agree with Terryallen, I know he has been several times to thes. We have stayed at all of them also, I would rate Raccoone Holler as best and then Flintlock.

You can look at Flintlock as well. Has good level sites, but is pretty close to the main road, and has a pretty good hill at the entrance / exit.

Also there is Boone KOA. But the sites are not real level.

While not exactly in Boone. Raccoone Holller CG is one of the best in the area. It is in Glendale Springs, just over the mountain.

We also like Honey Bear. But there are only about 4 campsites that we would consider staying in, and those are always full.

We prefer Honey Bear. Pros--It's in a convenient location and most of their sites are larger than other campgrounds in the area. Cons-Site numbers aren't well marked and some of the interior roads are rutted and rough. Cable TV isn't available, but that's true of most campgrounds in the area.

You may find it very difficult finding a site this late, particularly if you want to stay in the same campground the entire time. Fall is an extremely busy time in the NC mountains, and campgrounds near Boone book up far in advance on weekends when there are festivals or App State home football games. We have reservations for a couple of weekends in October, but we made them in April as soon as the campground opened for the year.
