Campgrounds near Indianapolis, IN.

Planning a 3-day weekend trip to Indy to visit the Children's Museum and the Zoo mainly. So amenities aren't at the top of the list; yet it'd be good if the kids had someplace to play and swim.

S&H and the Indy KOA had some poor reviews; especially given the prices. Heartland was cheaper, but also seemed to have some mixed reviews.

Anybody have any personal feedback or recommendations?

Thanks!

I knew when I posted about the fairgrounds and the Monon Trail someone would bring up the safety deal. Good Sam, Airstream, etc. use the location for caravans and rallies. And as far as the trail it no mores worries me there than when pedaling thru Broad Ripple! Just my opinion, and as usual your fuel mileage may vary.

cicero Indiana is not too far north check out "White River Campground" a county run park. No pool but nice and clean, I have stayed there 4 or 5 times and will again this October. Jim.

This is one of our favorites. Concrete pads and quite a few full hookup sites. We really like the ones that back up to the White River. The staff there is excellent. Park is very clean and it attracts a great group of campers.

I would NOT stay at the state fairgrounds, neighborhood is NOT good, also the Monon Trail is not too safe in that area.

White River in Cicero is a county park and I've heard good things about. If your kids need a pool there is a Jellystone Park off of I-70 at St Rd 109 - Knightstown about 40 miles away. I know nothing about reviews.

We have stayed at KOA & Heartland. Neither are great and neither are bad... nothing special. I like heartland a little better and it's cheaper.

When doing Indy, we always use the Indiana State Fairgrounds RV Park on 38th St. Puts us close to everything and Monon Bike?Walk Trail that comes thru there is great!

We always stay at the Indpls KOA in Greenfield and have lunch at Bub's Burgers in Carmel right on the bike path. If the kids are younger, and into Hot Dogs, Bub's may have no attraction for them. For all others their Burgers (in different sizes) are worth the trip. I like their Elk Burgers and we usually have milk shakes. BTW it's a popular place.

Check out Winton Woods campground.

Thanks, but Winton Woods would only put us 20min closer to Indy.

We stayed a week at Lake Haven last Fall on the South side of Indy. Nothing great amenity-wise but safe and fairly close to what we wanted to see and do. Our write-up on the place:
