Canyon CG in Yellowstone any fudge room in length

I am thinking about a trip in a couple years to Canyon CG in Yellowstone, the site says 40ft combined, my TT is 25ft total plus my truck, my truck is a standard cab, it will put me over just a couple feet.

has anybody been there with a comparable rig ? ?

  • The site we had was pretty much what the measurements said, no wiggle room, others varied some. Guess you take your chances if you fudge it. I did not see anyone enforcing the rule at any of the campgrounds.
  • Thanks RV2go, after some more looking looks like It's a go, now to get the date I need reserved.
  • I am facing a similar issue, heading to Yellowstone in about a month, I booked 30 ft rv spaces in 3 of the campgrounds 6 months ago for my 29'5" long motorhome, and now I have added a rear spare tire mount which extends my overall length out to 31 ft. I plan to show up and hope for the best, worst case I will unmount the spare tire if they get out a measuring tape.
  • It has been my experience that when making a reservation at Madison and Canyon, I just tell the agent my RV length and the length of my toad. I always get a site that I fit in.
  • Sure it is okay. The rules only apply to others not you and me
  • In a couple of years, you may have another truck, the campground may be closed or upgraded. Maybe a little early to ask this question!
  • Can you unhook your truck while there? If so, it may not be a problem because you can angle the truck into the space. Most sites suitable for an RV there just have a log on the ground at the back end of the space and you can put the tail end of the trailer over the log.

But you may face two problems: 1) they do not take reservations at Canyon (ie., you just have to take whatever space is vacant and the best sites are never vacant) and 2) it is heavily treed and some spaces are barely wider than the trailer (ie., your truck can't be angled in).
  • I'm 43 feet tip to tail and if the Feds say that's too long I respect their rule - designed for safety and/or the experience etc. - and I camp elsewhere. Doesn't matter if no one is watching....or measuring.
