Charlotte in April

Planning a long weekend / 4 day visit to Charlotte, NC and surrounding area with grandsons (ages 5 and 4) in mid April. Suggestions on where to camp (32'MH with toad) and what to visit? Would want FHU. Checked with rvparkreviews.com and most CGs I found have wide-ranging reviews from "best ever" to "worst ever" at same place! I always eliminate the best and worst ones, but that didn't seem to help. Yes, we like Nascar but don't think that should be the focus of this visit. Our grandsons would enjoy one stop at "the fast cars place" but need other ideas. Thanks for your help.
  • It's been several years, and things may have changed, but we stayed in Carrowinds Resort RV Park, which, I believe, in over the state line in South Carolina. We didn't use it, but I think there is an amusement park adjoining the RV Park.

Not a recommendation, just a report from some time ago.
  • We live about 20 miles north of Charlotte, so I have to admit I have not camped right in Charlotte. But when I saw the ages of your grandsons, I thought Dan Nicholas Park in Salisbury would be great fun for them. Do a search and you decide whether it suits your needs and wants. It has paddle boats, train, animals, gem mining, mini golf and a very nice campground. Just a great place and very reasonably priced.

Wherever you end up, enjoy making memories!
  • we went down there last year and stayed at Carowinds... it was perfect.. clean , decent size sites.. good location...
  • Carowinds starts at at about $60/night. Unless you want a tent/pop up site. For that price, you can stay at a much nicer place like Lake Norman Motorcoach Resort in the mooresville area and be on the lake.
  • For a place to camp, check out Ebenezer Park in Rock HIll, SC about 20 miles south of Charlotte. It is about 5 miles from I-77. It is located on Lake Wylie. It is a very nice county ran park. Some of the sites have a lake view even though the campsites are about 100 yards from the water. They have full hook ups, free wifi, and playground. Nightly rates are about $25. I'm not sure of the exact rate, but it is +/- $5. About half of the sites can be reserved and about 1/2 are 1st come 1st serve.

As far as thing to do, those that others mentioned wil be good. Depending on when you are here and since you like racing, you may want to visit a local dirt track. Carolina Speedway on Friday night in Gastonia, NC or Lancaster Speedway in Lancaster, SC on Saturday. Both of these are about 30 minutes from Ebenezer Park.

We also have Historic Brattonsville which may be interesting for them. This is where Mel Gibons movie, The Partiot, was filmed.
  • With that age, I also suggest Dan Nicholas Park in Rowan County/Salisbury.
as wbwood said, not full hookups, but they do have water and electric and a sewer dump for that part. Might work for your 4 day trip. Hope you can keep up with those kids if you go here though. Plenty to do and you will feel young again as you ride the ponies on the carosel. Just ask wb and terryallan.
They rode so many times they got dizzy. LOL
    gary
  • Lol. I will say watch out for snakes around the pond there at Dan Nicholas. When we were walking around it, we saw several.
