Commercial trailer parks near Redwood National Forest

Hi All: We are planning a trip to see the redwood National forest in Ca. this spring. Please comment on a commercial trailer park near the national park. Is May a good time of the year to view the forest and northern Ca.? Thanks. Jim2007

May should be great, but watch the weather this year. We left the area just before Thanksgiving. Got a lot of rain during the three weeks we were there. 299 was shortly closed due to snow the day after we used it. I consider there to be two major areas of trees. For those north of Crescent City, we used Shoreline RV in CC. Awesome recently renovated FHU park on the bay. For the groves south of Eureka, I concur that Ancient Redwoods is the best. Be advised it closes seasonally & will stay closed until heavy rains are past. May shouldn't be a problem. Call ahead. If it is, Riverwalk in Fortuna is next best. As suggested, use the various RV park review sites. rvparkreview is very good, but I also use Campendium, rvparky, TripAdvisor & Yelp. Different demographics.

Crescent City is where to start your search. There are some nice ones in that area (the town soso) Crescent City

If you want to stay a little more rural then Klamath is the place

1. KOA Crescent City. Be sure to look at the tent sites in the back right in among the redwood trees! And don't miss the Howland Hill Road Scenic Drive: Howland Hill Road Mostly unpaved; Motorhomes/RVs and trailers not advised.
Distance & Duration: 10 miles, one way (from Crescent City, Calif. to junction with U.S. 199 near Hiouchi, Calif.); 45 minutes.
Directions: From Crescent City, Calif.: drive south 1 mile on U.S. 101 and turn left (east-northeast) onto Elk Valley Road; continue 1 mile and turn right (east) onto Howland Hill Road; after ~1½ miles the road becomes unpaved as it enters Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park; continue another 5½ miles on Howland Hill Road until it becomes Douglas Park Road (paved); after 1½ miles turn left onto South Fork Road; after ½ mile South Fork Road junctions with U.S. 199 just east of Hiouchi, Calif.
Description: Just a couple miles west of Crescent City, an unpaved stretch of Howland Hill Road offers motorists an intimate encounter with the towering old-growth redwoods in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. Numerous pull-outs and trailheads along the way, including the Boy Scout Tree Trail and Stout Grove.

2. Ancient Redwoods RV Park in Redcrest CA. Right on the Avenue of the Giants (adjacent, not actually inside the trees). Check out their website. Very nice owners.

X2 Stopped there a couple of times. Incredible gift shop with redwood items made right there onsite.

X3 It's right in the heart of the big trees with many easy trails to explore them.

I highly recommend Benbow Valley KOA. It used to be called Benbow Resort and is still listed as such in some reviews. Located in or about Garberville in the center of one of the Redwood National Forests. Very large sites, easy access, part of a golf club (if you like golf). Excellent restaurant within walking distance at the Benbow Inn. We used it as our Redwood basecamp, and I would and will return.

We like the KOA in Crescent City

use rv park review as everybody likes something different.
i like redwood rv resort in crescent city,klamath rv park in klamath
and riverwalk rv park in fortuna but i am sure there is lots of opinions on this,
a lot of the parks open about may 15 and other are open year a round.
