Country Campground, Detroit Lakes, Minnisota ratings.

I disagree with the rating this campground received. I am aware that they passed the checklist and all campgrounds have their rules but I think something was overlooked in the rating criteria. We were supposed to stay a week but only stayed for 2 days and left the 3rd day. It is right next door to a turkey farm. I am a country girl and usually farms don't bother me. It was very hot which did not help I guess but it stank so bad that we could not sit outside and had to have the air going 24/7 as we could not open the windows. It was making us gag it was so bad. Not the fault of the campground but unfortunately I would not go there again. Also we had +40 degree weather. I asked if we could have a small kids pool with a little water in it for the kids and they said no way. They had a small, and I mean small cement area that a tiny picnic table was on and asked if we could put it on that and they said no to that as well. Water availability was not the issue. They would not bend even though the kids were very overheated. Ended up cooling them down in the shower which probably used more than the pool in the end. Did not want to take them to the beach because of fear of swimmers itch as the water was full of large snails and very algae covered. Weeds everywhere.
I do not recommend this campground as they would not work with us in their "rules" and the poor quality of the beach. This was during the 1st week of Sept. 2013 I seriously think their ratings should be re-evaluated, especially during the hotter weather.

Sorry to hear about your disappointing stay at the campground.

Stayed there for 6 days in middle of August. It was a very hot and dry August in the area.

Had a great stay and the people that manage the campground are very friendly. It is only 3 miles from my where my sister lives so it was a good location for us.

I grew up in the Detroit Lakes area and get back there every 2 years or so. We have stayed at 3 other campgrounds in the Detroit Lakes area and will return to Country Campground on our next visit.

The water in that area is very "hard" and they use a commercial water softener to condition the water. Probably the reason not to allow someone to use a kiddie pool.

One night the turkey farm did bother us - no issues the rest of the time. It was warm so we just closed the doors and ran the AC.

If you golf you may want to stay at Forest Hills Golf & RV Resort - they have an indoor pool. We stay there if we do not stay at Country Campground. The campground is getting to be more for summer full timers so make reservations early.

This is not intended in any way to be a refutation of the experience cited in the above post, but instead to show how different our experiences can be depending on the circumstances.

We stayed at Country Campground last September for a couple of days (as planned) and found it to be one of the pleasant experiences of a month long trip that included RV parks in Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, South Dakota, North Dakota, before we got to Detroit Lakes. (No need to add all the parks in which we stayed on the remainder of the trip home. We have told several of our RV friends about Country Campground and have recommended it.

Now let me admit: 1> we are older travelers with no children, only a lab dog; 2> it is possible the turkey farm is a new development. If it was there last year, we were not aware of it.

Our good experience does not make up for the bad experiences others have had, nor do they contradict them, but I share only to add an alternative experience.
