East coast camping

We are in the very early planning of a east coast camping trip. This will be our first long trip after retiring. Trip length will probably be 3 months. We will probably start our journey in South Carolina and hope to go all the way to Maine, maybe Nova Scotia. I have South and North Carolina covered. After that, I am lost. We would prefer to stay on the coastal route, not necessarily interstate travel. Any ideas of coastal campgrounds and must see attractions? We have never camped up the east coast farther than North Carolina. Thanks!

Bathrooms/showers are very nice in the State Park too. I believe the national park part is a bit lacking in facilities, but details are on the park website/reservation link

Why not Assateague NATIONAL PARK????

They are similar but the state park has some hookups. AC is nice as there is little shade and can get buggy at night.

Coastal Maine, follow route 1. Bailey's in Old Orchard, Libby's in York(on ocean),Camden Hills(on ocean but no beach 0rocks), Acadia National Park-many campground parks, Sea View, Eastport Maine-on ocean-no swimming just fishing. Bring your passport and hope over to Campanella Island, Canada. If you head inland- Grenville Maine to Moose Head Lake to see moose.
There is a lot to see in Vermont and New York state in the Adirondacks too.
Connecticut and Rhode Island have beautiful campgrounds too.
We are near Cape Cod which has many of our favorite campgrounds. What are your interest and how do you like to camp? That may help with your search.
See you on the road!

We did a wonderful trip from VA up to Maine a few years ago. We live in the western part of the state, almost into KY, so we drove to Luray and spent a few days there, then on up to DC for a few days of monuments and Smithsonian; then we headed for Baltimore and did a full day there, then on to Hershey, PA. We took in Hershey Park and then headed on north to Philadelphia since I had never seen the Liberty Bell or Constitution Hall. We headed on north, up I-84 and then cut across into Mass and headed on up to Maine. We did several stops in Maine in Old Orchard Beach, Portland then Mt. Desert Island and Acadia NP. We stayed about 5 days there and I could have stayed more. We then headed back south and took a few days with stops in Mystic and Salem. Celebrated the 4th of July with the Boston Pops on the Esplanade (it was fabulous). We stopped in NYC and stayed at Liberty Harbor for 5 days and did the NYC thing. (I hated it, but the rest of the family enjoyed it tremendously). We then headed back south and took in the DELMARVA for about a week. We had family that lived there for years, so we had visited a lot. It's a fabulous place. Headed on down and took the CBBT across to Va Beach and the headed back home. It was a long trip, but a good trip and we enjoyed all of it except for the drive back home. It just took too long and we were tired.

The Finger Lakes in NY state have some RV places, and a winery tour is a real experience if you like good wines. Just be sure to take a designated driver, or you won't make it back to the RV. Start out at a reasonable hour in the morning, stop for a good lunch, and you might make it till about 2 in the afternoon. Amazing how 3-4 tastings at each place adds up to!!

That, briefly, is my area of expertise. All I can say about getting to Maine is to bypass Philladelphia, NY, Hartford & Boston as best as possible by going inland.

Yeah get up into albany NY before you cut over...

The DELMARVA seems to be an area little known by most RVers.

Come across from Virginia Beach on the 20 mile long, with 2 1 mile long tunnels, CBBT onto the lower DELMARVA. It is as flat as Florida but there is plenty to see.

Stop at Wallops Island NASA launch facility. Small but interesting museum there. Step back in time in Crisfield & stuff yourself with seafood. James Island SP for some spectacular sunsets over the marsh. If kayaking is your thing, Shad Landing SP on rt113. A little north, Assateague Nat Seashore for the wild horses & beach. In the middle Martinak SP near Denton. From here make a day trip to St Michaels & the excellent maritime museum. Eat more crab. Maybe go all the way down to Tilghman Island. Have to stop in Delaware for a little sales tax free shopping. Killens Pond S of Dover is a good one. The air museum at Dover AFB is worth a stop too. Smallish but much more touchy feely than the big museums.

Once in NJ my advice, and as stated below, stay near capemay and see the sites. Cape may, hang out on the huge boardwalk at wildwood which is all right there.

After that in NJ there isnt much and I would suggest high tailing it out of there. Ride the parkway up and out into NY state.

The GSParkway has lower bridges up north and its a crappy ride from exit 130 to 160...

IMO you may be better off taking the ferry back over and riding mid PA up and over. The east side of PA is **** too as the roads are no good.
Unless there is something else in NJ that you want to see then I can help you with a place to stay.

Kneobles in PA is an old time amusment park. Thats a must see..Has two campgrounds on site
