Just a spelling correction to make it easier to find in Google, its
Callaway Gardens (no O in it).
The Little White House was FDR's home away from home. He came to Warm Springs when he found out about the "curing properties" of swimming in the pool at what was a tourist hotel prior to that. There were actually several different tourist hotels at various springs in the area, White Sulfur Springs, and Chalybeate Springs, and Warm Springs, in the late 1800's. They were all gone by about 1920. Roosevelt died in his home in Warm Springs and you can walk thru the bedroom, left just as it was the day he died in there, and you can see the automobile he drove, with hand controls, in the garage. He was well known and liked in the area, getting out and about during his frequent visits, seeing people on farms and city folks in the towns nearby.
FDR was a younger cousin of Theodore Roosevelt, and Teddy's mother (whose maiden name was Bulloch) was reputed to have been born near White Sulfur Springs (not far from Warm Springs, originally known as Bullochville), though some say she was born in Savannah and was moved to Warm Springs at a very young age.
Both the towns of Warm Springs and Pine Mountain, have a number of antique and curio shops that many people enjoy looking thru, and there are a few good eating places too. The restaurants at the Gardens serve veggies grown in their own gardens. There is a very nice butterfly house and quite a few other things, in addition to some great golf courses and the sand beach at Robin lake. Not sure if the Florida State Univ Flying High Circus still performs in the summer or not.
Be sure and eat at the Gardens Country Store, located right at the south west entrance to the park, at the intersection of US27 and GA190 on top of the mountain.
I grew up in Columbus and now live about 30 miles north of FDR park.
