There is channel all the way out, unless you have the Queen Mary
The channel is clearly marked with red and green markers.
We just came from there.
Off to the right of the channel as you are heading out there is a shallow area and off limits to motorized craft

That open area you go through, after leaving Key Largo campground, before you get to the mangroves which lead out to the main channel, is shallow. Very much so, at or near low tide.
