Grand Canyon Now?

Anyone at Grand Canyon SRim - how crowded is it??

Tried to go on .gov site, but it shows every site R the entire time CGs are open - which I can't imagine is true. But again, some folks have stated the new rec.gov site is worthless - I tend to believe it after looking at it today ... and I know some sites are non-reservable.

We might head there - will be in New Mexico tomorrow ... anyone have a clue about GCyn this week?
  • Are you trying to say they are all empty or all full. Normally that place fills up.

  • .gov site shows every site is reserved this entire year. I find that difficult to believe. We've been to many NP and SP that the recreation.gov site says all are reserved, and found sites open many times in the past.

We don't reserve sites when we travel, we just ask and find out if a park is busy or not, and often just show up and find sites even if we have to move a couple times. We were wondering if anyone is at Grand Cyn now, and if it's really crowded or not.
  • I found available sites later in the year. You're late for a very popular place.

Yeah, I know... Not really late, just traveling and will pass close by. Have been to GC many times on our cross-country treks. Usually crowded, sometimes not.

We're not looking to reserve anything - and usually get lucky at Desert View CG, which is first-come and inside the park.

There are walkup sites so arrive early. Unfortunately Ten-X USFS south of the rim does not open until the 20th.
  • May is a great time. A couple of friends are getting ready to do a Rim 2 Rim hike from N to S. In one day.
  • You could always stop at Williams if you are in the area. There should be spots there. Not as convenient as Trailer Village but looks nice there.
  • I would bet all the reserved sites are already taken. You're too late in the game to reserve this close in. There is availability later in the month and in mid-June, but GCNP is quite popular this time of year. There are no first come first served sites at Mather.
  • Not trying to reserve anything - we are Truck Camper and 4x4. Was just trying to find out how busy, how crowded it is. We don't require hook-ups. Don't matter now, we're on our way in tomorrow ... :)
