What it is like in early November? NP CGs still open? Reservations needed? (Dry camping is fine by us.)

If you come in on I-81 head toward Asheville on I-40 and get off at exit 435 to pick up 321 and take that into G'burg and to Elkmont. That way all you deal with is G'burg traffic as it bypasses Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. You are coming in on prime color tour tourism time and expect things to be congested in town.

Harley Dude wrote:We agree entirely with this post. If you're interested in the NP, skip Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Camp in Townsend. There are several really good campgrounds there, such as Tremont, KOA and Big Meadow.
We always stay at Tremont Campground. In Townsend...right at the edge of the Park and 5 minutes from Cades Cove. 30 minutes to Gatlinburg. This area is considered the Quiet side of the Smokies. We'll be back there in late Oct.

If you go hiking watch out for the bears, they are trying to fatten up before hibernating.
