Greenbrier State Park MD

This park is off of I70/US40 between Frederick and Hagerstown.
A few words of wisdom to those who might visit.
The scenery is beautiful and we were getting hill deprived over here in the flat lands. We could have done without some of them haha.
Do not follow GPS directions to the park. As you approach especially from the south take I70 exit 35 to US40 south. The park entrance will be about 2 miles on your right on a slight uphill so you can slow down to make the turn. From exit I70 exit 42 US40 N is a serious roller coaster and your turn into the park will be on the left after a brake test of a down slope. I did not attempt that left turn.
Inside the park is not much better with the Cedar loop on the side of a cliff. It is the only loop with electric, and the 2 water spigots are not where their map shows. There are also more of them than the map shows. I carry 250 ft of hose luckily.
There are nice beaches and swimming areas and they were pretty full this past weekend.
Lots of history in the area with some awesome views.
All MD parks list max lengths as 30' so I called and was assured they could take up to 40'. The unsaid truth was that some of the sites could. Some would have been a problem at 25'.
So check your brakes before you go, don't try 12K lbs with a gasser, and have fun.
  • Lantley, check out sites #1 and either #38 or #39 (whichever is the highest # on the outer side of the loop). The locals with bigger rigs already had those reserved during our visit and I soon found out why.
For #1 (first one on the right) you pull up into the exit of the loop and back straight in. It will handle your 40' with ease.
For the last outer loop spot you start to go up the hill past #1 but then back around the corner and up the exit of the loop straight into the perfectly angled site. Also plenty long.
Have fun, the place and the area are beautiful.

40' would be pushing it. There are probably some spots that are long enough for it, but not many. Its like Patapsco in that regard.

Patapsco is doable for me. There are a few sites I can work with. Greenbrier is close enough for me to take a drive and check it out.
    Thanks for the heads up

  • I am close to Greenbrier and I have been there when I was younger. However I have never been to the CG.
I guess my 40' 5'er would not do well there?

However the only electric loop is not bigger rig friendly.

Most of the Maryland state parks are on the smaller side. We have a 31' camper and find that it can be tight to fit in some spots (I miss my 22' foot camper...).
  • mdprowash we did like it overall. However the only electric loop is not bigger rig friendly.
We would never visit again as we are not local but the place was beautiful and the staff beyond friendly.
Evidently the beaches and trails fill to capacity in the warm months to the point they restrict entry. The parking lots are huge by the lake so I'm talking massive amounts of visitors that would impact the enjoyment of campers.
If you are close I would go visit w/o the camper and make your own decision. Lot's of class C, popups, and short A's. Lot's of tenters also. We had some right in our face that the group had to toss one of their own to preserve the peace.
  • I love Greenbrier. Beautiful lake and water access. Wonderful state park!
