I would not pull a 5th wheel from Morenci to Alpine up 191. It would be even worse coming down the mountain. If you decide to go to HM I would come in from Alpine. Another good spot is Big Lake, about 20 mi NW of Alpine. The road from Alpine to Big Lake is now paved 100% and they have full hook ups if they have any openings...

Check the 191, it's known for its hairpin turns and hundreds of curves. I wouldn't take a trailer on it. Its a motorcycle road. Used to be called the 666, Devil's Hwy. Wife and I drove it on our Goldwing and it flat wore me out. I'd puke if I had to do it in a car. lol

I've looked at it on Google Earth. Doable with 5er but definitely wold be interesting. Think it's going to be a wash for the October outing. Maybe Jemez mountains in NM.

North of Hannigans Meadow on 191 towards Eager/Springerville is fine for most RV's. South is not advised.

The area is beautiful high country. Numerous lakes and streams nearby. Love to take day trips from Hannigans to Black River, East Fork, Big Lake which are all 10-25 miles on well graded wide logging roads.

Yep I "camped" their for a month with FS Coeur d 'Alene Interregional Fire Crew summer of 1974. We lived in tents mounted on wood platforms at Hannegan Meadows. When lightning strikes would start fires around the area they would load 2 or 3 of us guys into an Allouette chopper, which would fly us there and drop us off with our sharpened shovel, a pulaski, and maybe a chainsaw. We'd dig a fire line around the burn. The helicopter would come pick us up the next morning. This was all out of Hannegan Meadows at approx 9200' in eastern Arizona. As a young guy the best shape I have ever been in my life. Firefighting is extremely hard work.

I know this is not the current experience to be found at that location, but seeing that familiar name from my past sure brought back memories to my summer job when I was in college.

There was some fire damage in the surrounding forest in 2011, but it is recovering nicely. It is a very nice campground in a very beautiful area.
Wildlife everywhere.
Aker Lake trail starts between sites 6&7, a 7 mile round trip to the lake.
I believe the campground close the end of September, not sure.
