If you still plan on being in the area Columbus Day weekend I'd highly recommend you make a reservation somewhere now. That's the end of the season for many campgrounds-and campers. Be advised that Rt. 1 can be very slow-doesn't seem like that will be an issue for you though. Acadia and Bar Harbor definitely. Take a sail or a whale watch out of Bar Harbor, enjoy the shops, do a carriage ride in Acadia, stick your toes in the ice cold water at Sand Beach off the park loop road and depending on how long you are there you might start to see the leaves turn. If the Clam Shack in Kennebunkport is still open go there for clams or fish and chips.
