help with travel route GA to MD

We took Rte 17 from Charleston SC all the way up go Williamsburg VA and enjoyed the rural route and lack of traffic. Just be careful of speed traps, especially in small towns. Camp on!

I say take 17 to Virginia Beach and then over the bridge tunnel. Much better scenery and many RV parks along the way

If you want an alternative to I-95, get off onto US-17 at I-95 exit 33 in South Carolina. There are bypasses around Charleston, Wilmington and most of Myrtle Beach. Charleston and Wilmington have some attractions worth seeing. There are RV parks in Suffolk, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach South of the Bay Bridge tunnel. After crossing the Bay, follow US-13 North. In Salisbury, MD; take US-50 to Annapolis.

If you don't have anything against KOAs, most of the KOAs in North Carolina are nice. It's been a few years since we stayed there, but we really liked the Smithfield KOA in Four Oaks, NC (exit 90 of I-95). That's about a 300 mile trip, so fits into the 5 hour drive with ease. Four Oaks to Annapolis is just over 300 miles, so without traffic, 5 hours will do it.

If you want to stretch it out across three days, I would recommend the Fredricksburg, VA KOA. It's a few miles off I-95 (heading North, I believe it is exit 118). We stopped there when our tow vehicle broke down and really liked it, even though we were stranded there.

Or you could drive up to Williamsburg, VA after leaving Smithfield and spend a day or two there. There is enough to do in Williamsburg to warrant spending two nights there. I've never camped in Williamsburg, so I can't recommend any campgrounds. Then drive to Annapolis from Williamsburg.

thanks for the tips. Just wanted to get on the road after some stress full years of work. So that was the plan not a deal breaker if we don't arrive in MD on Friday. Really didn't need the sarcasm from yrusoslo, but he is right, planning is key.

while waiting for responses, pull up google maps or whatever mapping site you like and start to plot your route. It appears you have 4 travel days so divide by 4 and then you have places you areas where you may stop. Then use rvpark reviews site and look at the campground reviews. This will get you into planning your own trips, something you may have time to do now that you are retired! Enjoy. I am sure others will give you get ideas of specific places to stay and routes to take!
