Our home base is Reno and will concede that the GSR parking lot is a good location for HAN's being that they are one of the car display sites.
With that you will of course have to make the choice but there are only 2 choices of places to stay while in the area that we recommend;
1. Sparks Marina
2. Gold Ranch in Verdi just west of Reno on I-80 near the Boomtown KOA (another parking lot).

X2 I like Gold Ranch best. We have stayed at both of these. It's a little more of a drive. For hot August nights I would pick Grand Sierra. You can see a few hundred cars there without having to drive yourself. Normally they have a discount for veterans but for special events maybe not. Nice places to eat onsite as well.
