Yes the Crab Shack on Tybee has to be experienced but get the lunch buffet at the Pirate House in Savannah, the fried chicken is up there with Michie's Tavern in Virginia as the best I ever had.

Boondocks was closed last fall (2015) and for sale. You can tour some of the area on Paris Island too and get a bit of the history and what basic is for the Marines. We like the Johnson Creek Tavern - good food and fair prices. Charleston is our favorite too over Savannah but we like the water front area and the squares. Take the trolley tour of the city. Take the carriage ride in Charleston for a unique view. Stop in at the tourist office in both cities for history and a film.

In Charleston - Hymans for seafood (Bubba Gump's is OK, too, but Hymans has a much bigger selection), take a carriage tour and the ghost tours are cool, too (you learn a lot of local history). At Patriot Point is the the USS Enterprise and you can catch the boat to Ft. Sumter. In North Charleston is the Warren Lasch Conservation facility where they are restoring the H. L. Hunley, a Confederate Civil War submarine. Fascinating. We also took in the S. Carolina Aquarium.

Savannah - yes, do the Riverwalk area and tour the city as well. Amazing homes. On Tybee Island is the Crab Shack - has to be experienced to be believed. We also took a boat tour to see dolphins; we weren't disappointed. Enjoy & safe travels.

If you want to spend a few bucks on a great meal in Savannah, go to the Pink House. You can dress up or down, no one cares. DH says the shrimp and grits are the best meal he has ever had. We go to Savannah every year for our anniversary and love so much about it. Greatly enjoyed our 'visit' to Bonaventure Cemetery. So much history! We also enjoy our own 'pub crawl' in Savannah. Can start on Bay Street and then go down to River Street. Fortunately now there's an elevator next to the Hyatt that makes the 'step down' much easier. We also love Savannah Smiles - it's a dueling pianos bar. Great fun and fair prices! In Charleston, definitely take a carriage ride (make sure to get book of discounts - they're everywhere). For food in Charleston, depends on how much you want to spend. GREAT and pricy restaurants in the central market area - as well as T Bones (not part of any restaurant chain) that is a local-type bar and grill. Have a great trip!
Two young retirees restless to GO!
Life is too short to wait too long to do all we want to do!!
Go and enjoy!!

Have to echo what Larry B. Just said. While at Hunting go to the pier and take the trail to where there used to be houses, a paved road, and experience what nature will do to man made objects given a chance. There is still a house on poles 50 yards out in the water that used to be beach front. It is not nice to mess with Mother Nature. She has no sense of humor.

If you're into military history, visit Patriots Point, Ft. Sumter in Charleston. Just note there is no "as the crow files" way to get from Hunting to Charleston so be prepared.

OMG you don't have to go to savanah! First, check out the Johnson Creek Tavern, just outside the park gates. Good food and lots of good energy. Write your wish on a $1 bill and staple it to the wall; thousands are displayed right now; they donate all to good causes. Then go on down the road a couple miles to Gay Fish Company for the freshest most delicious shrimp. We love our shrimp dinners at the campground! Plan lunch on the porch at The Plum Restaurant in downtown Beaufort, looking out over the newly renovated park and the river. Tour some of the old houses. After lunch go across the street to the Southern Sweets ice cream shop for a treat. Much to see in the little shops in Beaufort. And be sure to climb to the top of the lighthouse at least once on Hunting island. Or walk out the long causeway into the tidal marsh at sunset and see the wildlife at sunset. So much to do. Savannah? Too much right there at HI.

Hopefully your incoming Ocean breeze will keep those little bitty mosquitoes at bay... We got run out one year camping at Edisto Beach - no where to hide... Those mosquitoes are so small they can fly straight through a window screen and not even slow down haha...

Those aren't mosquitoes, they are biting gnats.

In Charleston do the horse drawn carriage tour. It is great and you'll get a history of the city. We also liked touring the antebellum mansions and plantations. Great and interesting area.
