- TerryallanExplorer IIIt's great.
We just hit 171 to Folly road, to 700 to Riverland drive at the Golf course. but it has been a while since we were there. - riggspExplorerJust left there a week ago...take I-26 to I-526 toward James Island , Then Hwy-17 to Folly Rd,, then Maybank Blvd, then Riverland to the park entrance....you'll avoid the narrow roads close in to Charleston.
- FulltimersExplorerJames Island...Good Choice.
- spoon059Explorer IIJames Island is probably our favorite all around campground ever. The campground itself is very nice. The store is clean and employees friendly. The county park itself is gorgeous. Nice little lake, nice bike paths, nice playgrounds for the kids, nice water park, etc. The location is fantastic too. We absolutely LOVE Charleston and the park is so convenient to downtown Charleston as well as Folly Beach, Mt Pleasant, etc. Also, I believe that if you have your campground parking pass it allows you to park for free at Folly Beach, but research that before you take action.
What size rig are you driving and from what direction are you approaching? There are some routes that are a little "tighter", but you should still have good access no matter which direction you approach. My one warning is that if you come down Central Park and turn left to Riverland its a T intersection with a stop sign. That can back up at certain times of day.
No matter what, its a great park and I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time! - Retired_JSOExplorerComing from I-26, we take 17 south to Folly Rd right to Camp Road, then turn right to park entrance more roadway, less traffic.
- kmwaterboyExplorerThanks for the information. Just wondering if hitting 526 to 17 was the better route.
Going down to Dreher Island for a few days then down to James Island for a few more days. Have never been to Charleston, hope to see the sights and eat some good food. - LibertyManExplorerWe absolutely loved James Island. If you have kids, bring the bikes. Paved bike trails go all the way around the island and you can access them from the campground. Last time I went it was in April, and the mosquito's were starting to come out in force so be prepared for that.

Patriots Point is awesome, we try to go almost every trip down there. GREAT breakfast place is Page's Okra Grill. They probably have great lunch and dinners too, but we go for breakfast. Mondo's Italian on Folly Rd is close to the campground, delicious Italian food. Isle of Palms beach is a great beach with a nice pier, clean bathrooms and plenty of parking. D'Allesandro's Pizza is the best pizza in the city too. - riggspExplorerWe were towing a 34ft 5th wheel, and the I-526 to Hwy-17 was the easiest for us...mileage was slightly longer, but time wise it was shorter and as I said, you avoid some of the tight, close intown roads...either way you go, your gps will want take you down Central Park Rd...take Maybank instead and turn left at the traffic light at the golf course (Riverland)...as stated earlier by spoon059, Central Park ends at a "T" with no light...nearly impossible to turn left on Riverbank when traffic is heavy.
- HorsedocExplorer IIRide over the bridge to Mt Pleasant and have lunch and a brew at Red's Ice House and maybe dinner at the Shem Creek Bar and Grill
