Joe Wheeler State Park is about 50-60 miles west of Huntsville, AL. The state park in Huntsville with a nice campground is Monte Sano State Park atop Monte Sano mountain. Joe Wheeler is a great park but if proximity to Huntsville is a requirement, you might be better served with Monte Sano.

Joe Wheeler State Park is beautiful. Full hookup sites and some 50 amp available. Do have walking trails, don't remember where they were located. There is a park map on their website. I don't remember campfire rings. Also some park so have fire bans. I would call the park directly to ask about fires. There is a swimming beach although don't remember it being withing walking distance. Although we were lakefront, the bank was a bit steep. Don't remember our site number. I don't think you can reserve a specific site. It's a great park with nice bathrooms and lots to do. One of our favorites!
