Kehl Springs, FR300, AZ

How rough is the 6 miles of FR300 from AZ 87 to Kehl Springs CG? We are driving a 25' Class C with decent ground clearance. Time frame is this coming week. Thanks!
  • I've been on that road a couple of times while hunting. It's okay with a 4x4 most of the time. The campground is at 7500 feet, and it's snowing right now. If the snow is still melting off by next weekend, the road will have some serious mud issues and be difficult to navigate in some spots, even with 4x4. If you really want to give it a shot, you can proceed slowly, and if you encounter a mud bog you don't want to attempt, you shouldn't have too much problem backing up and finding a place to turn around. One other issue is low hanging branches. You can easily damage your roof or AC unit if you're not careful in navigating under the trees.

BTW, the limit on units in that campground is "under 22 feet". You'll probably be okay if you make it in, but the Forest Service can evict you from the campground for being over length.
  • All the roads in the Coconino Forest are closed till April. Well, we should have called first. It was not much out of our way, though.
