Looking for a new destination advice

Hello,

My wife and I are looking to plan our early summer (June) trip. We have always gone to Myrtle Beach and stayed at Willow Tree RV Resort. We really like this park but she asked if there was someplace different that we might try.

Some information about us
We live 20 miles south of Pittsburgh PA
Travel towing a 31 foot 5th wheel
We have three Cocker Spaniels that travel with us.

When going to Myrtle we would leave around 3pm travel to around 11pm or so and then stop at a rest area sleep for awhile and then complete the trip. I would like to keep travel down to two days if at all possible

We prefer quieter campgrounds that have a pool allow pets and some space between units. We do not like campgrounds like the beachfront campgrounds in Myrtle. They are too large and crowded for us.

A place to walk our dogs

We do not spend a lot of time directly on the beach when in myrtle but enjoy the other attractions there.

I thought I would post here to get other opinions / options on where we might go and do this June.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Dave

I forgot to mention that I suffered heart attacks and two strokes. I am stable now but walking hills can bring on chest discomfort

We have stayed at Cypress Camping Resort in Myrtle Beach several times.

It's a small RV park located on the Intracoastal Waterway but close to everything.

Nice size sites, big rig access and amenities include a swimming pool.

Definitely pet friendly with plenty of open space to walk your dogs.

We also stayed there several years ago. It was a very nice park and if you had a boat or jet ski even better as they had a launch right there.

The only negative were the bugs in the evening. No amount of bug spray would keep them away and we also had an infestation of ants come into our RV.

Pittsburgh is a pretty good starting point. From there your two-day travel time and 600-700 mile Myrtle Beach distance could take you to:

Almost anywhere in New England or Upstate New York, but particularly the Adirondacks or White Mountains.

Anywhere in Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, which has hundreds of destinations that fit description of what you say you like.

Nashville, with nice public campgrounds outside the city, decent RV parks on Music City Row, and a town full of historic and musical attractions. Or stretching the distance, Memphis, which might not be quite as gentile, but Elvis was there.

Atlanta, Chicago, or St Louis, if you are inclined to visit cities. NYC, DC and Boston are also within reach, but are not so easy as RV destinations.

The southern Appalachians, either the natural beauty of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, or the commercial attractions at Gatlinburg or Dollywood, depending on your inclinations. You might not be up to the climb to Clingman's Dome.

Branson area of Missouri-Arkansas might be another day of driving. The attractions are sort of a hillbilly Disneyworld or family-friendly Las Vegas. From Pittsburgh, however, Dollywood is a start on the same theme, closer to home.

On a business trip I was able to take the tour of Graceland. Was a little surprised at the size of the house but it was great to see. My wife has always been a little miffed that I got to see that and she didn't. I also was in Tupelo and saw his "supposed house" there. Also a point of contention with the wife. My concern is Memphis. I did a lot of travel through there and even where Graceland is you don't have to go to far to be in a place you don't want to be. I might look into the campground at Graceland and they have shuttles to some of the restaurants and such. According to Google maps the travel time is just a bit more than Myrtle but not enough for me to worry about it.

I am thinking that I might do a multi stop trip. Go to Memphis see Graceland then to Tupelo as I have some friends there then to Gatlinburg then home. I will have about ten days so I think it is do able. Any thoughts?

Thanks again to all for your help!

We stayed at Willowtree too and liked it. But we also stayed at Huntington Beach State Park which seems to have everything you want. Lots of seperation between most sites. Short walk to the beach. Some FHU, the rest water and electric. They also have a great nature program with walks and talks on the beach or in the nature lodge. There is an old house which was the residence of the original owners which is open for tours. You are right down the road from Murrel's Inlet where they have some good restaurants. But if you want a completely different location, Pipestem State Resort Park in Southern West Virginia has it all. Nice campground, plus ahotel and a lodge. Indoor and outdoor swimming, gold horseback riding, 2 restaurants, archery, nature walks, tennis and more. http://www.pipestemresort.com/

Thank You!
We actually went to this park to walk the beach. The issue is no swimming pool. I know there is the ocean but my weakness from the strokes makes it difficult to swim in the ocean and deal with the waves. I can't really go in anymore than my knees and even then due to poor balance risk getting knocked down.

Other than that issue it is a beautiful park and would stay there if it had a pool.

This looked like a really nice park but they have a two pet limit. I have three cocker spaniels that travel with us.

Perhaps if you call and politely ask them about this, they will change their mind. I've done that already at other places with a 2 pet limit.

If you like the attractions of Myrtle Beach then maybe its time to come back to the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area again. A lot has changed in 10 years here. A very nice and new campground called Anchor Down (look them up online)sounds like something you would enjoy, big sites with level concrete pads and stacked stone fire places, beautiful views overlooking Douglas lake and they just put in a nice dog park and its located outside of all the hubbub of town but close enough to drive to in 15 minutes.

Lots of dinner shows to see and other things to do. The Titanic museum is worth while, a drive over to Cherokee gets you a Harrah's casino, there is always a visit to downtown Knoxville to pass a day, so much to see and do or just enjoy a great campground and do nothing.

So a Google search for `_____ tourism' and put the State, city, area or whatever in the blank space and read what the specialists recommend.

Does Branson appeal to you? Lots of campgrounds there with varying facilities.
Seeing a couple of shows is always fun too.

Could always try the mountains. The NC high country, and the Gatlinburg TNN area have every thing MB has. Just no ocean., and it will be cooler, at least in the High country.

We stayed in Sierville (sp?) about 10 years ago with my daughters. We enjoyed Dollywood and the water park as well as touring Gatlinburg.

One thing I forgot to mention is that I suffered several heart attacks and two strokes so my mobility is somewhat impacted. I can handle flat ground okay but hills sometimes bring on chest discomfort.

We were at the Camping show this past fall in Hershey Pa, and was struck by a new destination for us this summer. Its called CreekFire Rv. Ranch. Its located in Savanna Ga. The reps. said they are only about 20 min. to downtown Savanna, their website looks good, and they were sincere in answering our questions etc. We plan on going this summer. We figure it being new its worth checking out. Good Luck and Happy Camping !!
