Looking for Fall Suggestions

Yep, I know most of the 'Snow-Birds' are headed South, but in the Fall, we like to head NORTH - for a week or two! (We 'enjoyed' snow in Canada one 4th of July and that confirmed that I DO NOT like snow!! - especially on the road - we parked off the road in the COLD for two days!!)

So now, I'm trying to plan an 'interesting' fall trip (to see the 'colors' for sure). Been to Gatlinburg several times and after the last outing, have no desire to go back! (Stop & Go up the mountain and back was no fun and the crowds on the street were unpleasant - Gatlinburg in 1996 was great fun, but no more!)

We have enjoyed Hot Springs N.C in two previous trips and I would like to find a similar place - off of the high-traffic route and with pleasant and enjoyable surroundings - read 'few but fine folks' - perhaps with some local entertainment on the weekend.

Where is your personal 'GREAT PLACE'?? and if you will share, a PM would be fine so everyone reading this post does not show up at the same time!!

One of my favorite Fall Color locations is Ricketts Glen State Park in PA. A 7 mile trail along 22 waterfalls and hundreds of cascades, etc.

If you do the Blue Ridge Parkway, a short hop over to West Virginia & Babcock State Park and the Glade Creek Grist Mill is worth a stop:

Jon,

Great shot of the Mill - It has so much depth it almost looks painted.

When you walk out your back Door it probably looks pretty good, Upstate can be as good as anyplace I've ever been. My all time favorite though, is Independence Pass, in Colorado - late September, those Golden Aspen are hard to Beat.

I just had another thought -- if you want to take a really long drive, and you want color in mid-September, check out the larches in the mountains surrounding Lake Louise, in Alberta:

These are conifers, not broad-leafed trees, that turn bright gold and yellow -- amazing!

Believe it or not, the Eastern Sierra has great fall color in late September -- this is Grass Lake, in the Bishop Creek area:

Yes, it is kind of a long drive -- but that would then put you in perfect position to tour the Southwest during October, the best time of year (in my opinion).

Check out the "Big South Fork National River and Recreation area" on the boarder of KY and TN. 2 National park campgrounds, Blue Heron in KY is our favorite. Much to do and it is rarely crowded and there is no traffic.

Northern Arkansas has some beautiful Fall color. And usually has a lot of Wildlife stirring. Usually mid to late October is the Peak of colors.

The North Rim of the Grand Canyon and the surrounding country in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado starting in mid Sept could keep you busy for a month to 6 weeks. And then finish it off by visiting the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and take the helicopter tour over the canyon!

I second the skyline drive. Weekends get a bit crowded but weekdays are great. I live about ten miles from the entrance too.

Skyline Drive and/or the Blue Ridge Parkway are pretty good in the Fall, but avoid the weekends if you don't like traffic during peak fall foliage periods.

Depending on how far you want to travel, Autumn in Colorado is pretty spectacular! Changing of the Aspens in September is a sight to behold, and there are many venues to see them. There are also some other colours in addition to the gold of the Aspens, makes for a beautiful trip!
