Mackinaw City, MI

Looking to take a short trip to Mackinaw City so we can visit the Island... Does anyone have any good tips on campgrounds in the area that are big rig friendly >?

Here is an excellent Michigan park review from a blogger with a 40' motorhome:

Mill Creek is where they stayed.

The daily rates on some of these places are very high!

There's no taking a toad to the island. The ferry transports people, pets and bicycles only. The island is mostly vehicle free except for emergency and maintenance vehicles.

I think he's referring from the campground to the ferry.

If you plan on doing any UP touring, cross the bridge and stay in St. Ignace. Less hustle and bustle.

FYI - Wilderness State Park has new sites for big rigs with 50 amp. And a new 3 lane dump station. The big rig sites opened last year after we were there.
Like Lakeshore for the view of the water but you are close together. Straits State Park is OK and close to the ferry. TeePee is a small campground and limited bigger sites. Mill Creek had lots of sites, different types, but lots of kids. Haven't been to the KOA's. Sort of depends on what is important to you and when you go.

X2. This is where we stay when we are by the bridge.

If you prefer a more natural setting, try Wilderness state park. It's only 20 minutes from the ferry and is a beautiful park.

+1, this place is amazing.

Lakeshore CG in St. Ignace is just ok. Too close to your neighbors, but very clean and quiet.

We stayed at the St. Ingias KOA which was ok as a base camp for Macinac Island and Ste. St. Marie excursions. We stayed there since we were coming from Green Bay.

We also stayed at Mackinaw Mill Creek. We liked it. Large campground, lots of good bike riding. Our site was large. The bridge view sites right behind us were very tiny. Otherwise I highly recommend it!

I am not a big fan of mill creek, the sites are on the small side and restroom facilities are limited. If you are looking for an easy in, easy out campground then my recommendation would be the Mackinaw City KOA which has pull through sites that are fairly easy to access. If you want a nice view of the bridge and to be close to town than I would stay at Tee Pee Campground, but make your reservations early as they have a limited number of larger sites.
