I spoke with a volunteer at one of the cape lighthouses. He said that the steamship authority accepts bids for operating and maintaining the ferries. As a governmental agency, they must accept the lowest bid. He said that at the last bid, things went downhill fast. He said that there have been over 600 trips cancelled this year, which is what Jerry has been saying.
I ended up booking on Hy-Line for a trip tomorrow (Wed). It was a little more expensive than Island Queen, but closer to our campground, and more departure times to choose from.
