McAllen TX area vs Mesa AZ area

For spending time in the winter, which would you choose & why, please?
This is our first winter heading south & we don't currently have any reservations. We have never experienced a 55+ resort and want to give a couple a try. How difficult will it be to get in somewhere in either of these locations? Thanks!
  • Have spent winters both places and prefer the Mesa area. More hiking and outdoor things that interest us. Just so much history and neat places. We stayed in Gold Canyon at the foot hills of the Superstition Mountains and each day the view was just awesome. You should try both areas in your life time..JMO
  • We have spent the last 4 years in McAllen. We like the area and all the event that are available.
This winter we are going to spend the winter in Mesa. We have spent time there before. My sister lives there. Lots to do. After last winter in McAllen with the cold and wet. I look forward to a dry winter in Mesa.
Couple of other reasons for staying in Mesa. Wife needs to see a specialist at Mayo Clinic. We want to attend THE RALLY in February.
We will probably go back to McAllen for some of the winter next year. We have a lot of friends there.
  • McAllen Texas is about 10 miles from the Mexico border, Mesa Arizona is about 100 miles from the Mexico border, nuff said.
  • Someone I know very well used to live in McAllen. Its a major entry point from Mexico. So is the surrounding area.

Have you considered Columbus NM? Big snowbird boondocking area.
