I thought the little store was the other way, near the (defunct?) private trailer park on the beach, east of the park entrance?
Every time I've visited the park, I've seen a near miss between visitors and drivers that refuse to yield right of way where the highway bisects the road linking the old lakeshore loops to the interior loops. Pedestrians shouldn't have to yield to vehicles, it's the other way around, but drivers are in too much of a hurry to care about that

Only one negative to Wilderness is the highway that runs through the middle of the park. The State wasn't able to purchase all of the land inside the park boundaries so there's quite a bit of private land mixed in, and the locals don't slow down at all when passing through.
I sometimes wish the state would get its heavy hand out, invoke eminent domain over the remaining private land parcels, making the park whole and shutting down the highway.

We stayed at a couple of state parks on our way to the UP and as a disabled vet were not charged use fees until we hit Brimely SP and were taken back by the sudden change of regs. Being from Missouri and unaware of the use fees it was sort of a shock. Not that I minded, it's just that half way though our trip all of a sudden we're hit with another fee.

On your way up, try Wilderness State Park. We made a day/night over there and wished we had more time. Very nice park.
