I don't know what the campsite availability will be in late Sept. and I would suggest contacting the Chamber and asking them(or if they have a Tourism Council). We made a last minute decision on May 23rd to go that way from Las Vegas and campgrounds were packed.
It's because Spring and Fall are prime time for Moab where the majority of group get together's, rallies and meets are all happening in Moab. Summer is just way too hot and winter is way too cold with snow/rain. Moab is an adult outdoor enthusiast's playground and attracts a lot of people looking to do MTBing, Hiking, Climbing, ATV, SxS, Jeeping, Camping, etc. Then add in Arches NP which is right there too...
I've attended two ATVing meets the last two years during spring in Moab and we always try and plan having our meet not during the biggest events. You can look up that info on the Moab Chamber of Commerce web page to see a lot of that info. Highly recommended to reserve months in advance for RV spots or cabins in Moab during the prime times.
