My S&B smells like mildew :(

I kept it at 50 degrees while I was away. Apparently that was not enough. There is no water infiltration, roof leakage, etc. I found one tiny patch of mold on the wall behind a knicknack, I assume from condensation, and I am guessing that will turn out to be everywhere air is stagnant.

Is there anything I can do about the smell now? I have been airing out the house for a couple of weeks, doors and windows open all afternoon on sunny days, but it has not helped much. And i am cleaning!
  • Do you have a basement? and if so, is there a sump pump that is running?
  • Keep cleaning and get a dehumidifier. If you have carpet, get it steam-cleaned professionally.
  • Have you opened up closet and cabinet doors or anywhere closed up to let them air out too? Read a post on a forum from someone in the north. They said rather than close up their place, they left some windows slightly open so air could circulate and they never had a problem with condensation or mildew smell. Said contrary to popular belief, even cold with air circulation was better for the house.
  • In our area 50 is too cold. We keep it between 60~65 to keep every thing dry.
