Next week we will be up at Atlanic Oaks in Eastham. We are going to do a day trip and are planning to take the High speed ferry out of Hyannis.

We are planning on bringing our 2 trek bikes, is this a good idea?
Any must see places, good eats?

Thanks for your replies

I think I asked this about Martha's Vineyard, as well, but don't remember. Bikes or rental car?

Mopeds if you're adventurous. Catch the Island Queen out of Falmouth harbor to Oak Bluffs. Plenty of moped rentals there. Do it before they outlaw mopeds Just a matter of time.

Wow, I'll have to run that by the DW. We're not spring chickens anymore, and she had a double knee replacement in Feb. Who knows, she just might go for it.

This is our thinking to, will probably do a moped rental when we do a trip to Martha's Vineyard. We were thinking of doing 2 days, 2 islands but it was just to much for a 4 night stay at Atlantic Oaks.

If we were to do Nantucket again and if we were to tour the whole island it would probably be mopeds. If mostly intown and maybe 1 beach then probably bikes.

Thanks, Mike. If you had to do it over again, would you still take your bikes, or would you look at renting a car to expand the available sites to see? The DW and I do plan to bring our bikes along.

Just a note. We rented a car in ACK and it was a waste of money. We picked it up at 10 and by 1:30 we had seen the whole island. Now, if you rent a 4X4 and hit Great Point, that might be worth it.

They price daily rentals at exactly what you would pay to get the car over on the slow ferry.

I do have some more info though I would't call it a full trip report, Where the ferry docks there is both motor bike and peddle bikes shops. (we brought ours) Pay for the Whaling museum, they will give you a pass for the windmill tour and other stuff that I can't remember. Down town has cobblestone roads so you will have to walk a couple of blocks before you are back on paved road and able to bike. We biked to surfside beach which does have the bathrooms and changing stalls, food concessions also. I would get in as early as possible and leave late as possible as we didn't have enough time to do the biking trails around the island as we spent to much time in town. Hyannis High speed ferry rates are cheaper during the weekdays.

Hope this helps
Have fun! :C

A full trip report would be great, if you're willing to do so. We head to Atlantic Oaks the last week of Sept, and hope to do a day at Nantucket as well.

Thanks everyone for your advice, we got off the ferry at 9am and left the island at 615pm..used every minute there. Lots of biking, got some beach, DW got her shopping fix. Whaling museum was excellent also got a one on one tour of the oldest working windmill. Had breakfest at the Frog Island Cafe and a light dinner at the Rose and Crown Pub! overall a great day!

Didn't see Bill B though... ๐Ÿ˜‰

Most of the Nantucket busses have a bike rack on the front. Of course there is a limit as to how many bikes can be added. If you are up to a long bike ride, (a bit over 8 miles) head out to Sconset, a very different community. I have a page of photos of Nantucket, with a link to many visits (My parents retired there & my brother still lives on the island).

Nantucket has an excellent public bus system which has routes that cover the entire island. Don't remember if the buses accommodate bikes. As I recall, you can get an all day pass.

Thanks everyone for your replies. We will check out the bike trails. Whaling museum is on the list and maybe the light house. Planning on bringing our appetites, we will keep an eye out for the Rose and Crown Pub or something similar. Hopefully the dining will live up to the standred of Arnolds! :C

Lots of restaurants down town. Bike paths all over the island. You will need more than one day to see it all. Do go to whaling museum it's in town.

Can't help with the bikes, but we enjoyed the whaling museum there better than the one in New Bedford.
