We were there last fall and loved camping at Lake Catherine SP. It's only about 15-20 minutes from Hot Springs.

Why do you think this is not a National Park?
Many interesting things to see around Hot Springs.
I guess it is what you want to see.

We agree. Lake Ouachita SP is by far a better choice

I highly recommend Mid America Park Museum in Hot Springs.
I also recommend eating at McClards

I thought that Hot Springs was one of the two least interesting and boring National Park in the fifty some National Parks we have visited. The visitors center had absolutely nothing in plain view about the Gorge campground but then again it is not a National Park. We've been there and done that and have no reason to go back, just like Congaree.

New to the area, I would suggest you stay at the Crater of Diamonds State Park and dig for diamonds. You could day trip to Hot Springs. About 60 miles.
