North East OKlahoma Campgrounds

Oklahoma campers - Will be in Tulsa for a concert Nov 8. Need a campground recommendation for the night. Also we have until the 11th off and was thinking of leaving Tulsa and going someplace in the Northeast OK area. Anyone have any ideas of something to do in the area. We have been to the museum in Tulsa, gun museum in Claremore. Hubby doesn't want to shop. Any suggestions we live about 5 hours SW of Tulsa. Thanks Deb
  • Have you ever been to Cedar Lake in the Quachita Mountains? Not much to do there other than drive the Talimena Scenic Drive and go to Queen Wilhelmina state park, but the scenery is worth it
  • the Brady is in downtown. I like Brookside area on Peoria south of downtown.

Tulsa is a nice place to visit. Plenty to do for a weekend but I'd probably get a motel and hang around T Townn.

Most of the state parks mentioned like Grand lake and Spavinaw are more that an hour out of town. I think the Hard Rock (?) tribe Casino has camping right on the east end of town on I-44.
  • Lots of great ideas. Question is there any campgrounds that are like Red Rock Canyon in Hinton in eastern OK? For the first night we will be going to the Brady Theater. Looks like it is on the west side of town. Not sure to stay at Keystone or one of the two in town. They both have mixed reviews? Thanks for all the other ideas. We just now have to pick one to go to. A couple of them said they are usually full during hunting season. Need to check some more. Thanks
  • Campground or RV park?

There's a RV park at the fairgrounds (might now be called Expo Center) at the north entrance. Another at the Claremore Expo Center. Nice RV park (Cedar Oaks) on Grand Lake in Grove; one of several on the lake. There is also Mingo RV park near the intersection of I-244 and US-169, reviews are mixed because some people don't like to be around long term residents who work for a living. I have no personal experience there, as it is too close to home to be staying for the night.

For campgrounds, the state parks will have campgrounds open: Disney at the south end of Grand Lake, Bernice on the northeast side of Grand Lake, Spavinaw on Spavinaw Lake, Twin Bridges up by Wyandotte, Osage Hills in eastern Osage County between Pawhuska and Bartlesville. West of Tulsa, Lake Keystone and Walnut Creek state parks on Keystone Lake.

Most of the time I would recommend the COE parks, but for many of the properties the main campgrounds close for the winter at end of October when the volunteer hosts leave for warmer places. Some keep a small collection of sites available, will have electricity but water might be turned off until spring.

I think Woolaroc, on SR-123 south of Bartlesville, is worth a visit. It stays open year round.

I also like Tenkiller Ferry Lake, a COE on the west side, state park east of the dam, and Greenleaf Lake state park, just outside of Braggs on SR-10. That's more like east central, than northeast, all south of Muskogee, almost to I-40.
  • Don't overlook Tenkiller Lake. Fall colors are peaking and campgrounds are nearly vacant.
  • You could camp at Tall Chief Cove (COE) west of Sperry (on the lake), then drive to Woolaroc. Or there's a state park west of Bartlesville, Osage Hills, that has some nice walking trails near a stream. Another one I like is Robbers Cave SP near Wilburton; nice trails and interesting rock formations near and above the cave.
  • Check out the Tulsa RV Ranch in Beggs, OK. just south of Tulsa. Have read some very interesting things about that place.
  • to do in tulsa?
    gilcrease museum
    philbrook museum
will rogers museum in claremore as well as the gun museum
