Ohio State Parks

I'm thinking of a long weekend get-away with my wife. I live in Ohio but have not stayed at any state parks in Ohio. I've looked at Hocking Hills State Park but I need some suggestions on a site as I have a pretty big rig and will need at least a 40-45' site. I've looked at the website for Hocking Hills but its hard to tell about some of the sites from the pics.
OR.....any suggestions on another state park in Ohio?? I would like to keep within 2-3 hr drive of southeastern Ohio (right on the Ohio River) so Cleveland/Akron/Toledo areas are too far away for an extended weekend trip.
Thanks for any suggestions you have.

  • Caesar Creek SP is a newer park with many larger sites. I'm not sure about others... Or come over the border a little to Whitewater Memorial SP in Indiana, which also has many RV-friendly (and pull-through) sites.
  • I am not far from you in Parkersburg, WV. We camp more in Ohio than any other state.

Not a State Park, but we like Wayne National Forest in Ironton. There are 2 campgrounds there and the COE lake. We camp at Oak Hill http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/wayne/recreation/camping-cabins/recarea/?recid=6206&actid=29

We also like Salt Fork off I77 in SE Ohio. http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/saltfork

If you bike or kick scoot, try Coshocton Lake Park. I love that it is surrounded by the Three Rivers Bikeway. http://www.coshoctonlakepark.com/

You might try Happy Hills campground in Nelsonville instead of Hocking Hills. It is a private campground, not state park, though. Still close and easier access. You can get a bison burger at Rocky's Outfitters in Nelsonville There is also the Hocking Hills Flea market complex near Logan. That campground is probably the easiest for you to get to - Rt 7 to 33.

Yes, it looks like rain and cool this weekend, we will be at Atwood Lake for the Atwood Fall Festival. Last year at the Fall Festival we had hail. It is the best festival in Ohio in our opinion.

  • Fellow Ohio person :)

Call the camp ground directly... and ASK ...

    I am new with a 30 footer... and F 250 long bed..

I just stayed at Pymatuning state park .. had to park truck on the grass.. as many also did..
I did call and ask. about size. and ask for earlier arrival(check-in) time.

Going this weekend to Tappan Lake state park, looks like Rain.
  • Hocking Hills is a great place to camp and hike, but given the size of your rig, I suggest you consider the KOA instead of the state park campground. We were in the state park campground a couple of years back with our 32 foot fiver, and while we fit, the road up to the CG was a bit challenging. We've since 'upgraded' to a 38 foot rig, and have decided that the local KOA is the better choice for us. We haven't stayed there ourselves, but have heard from many folks that it's a very nice CG.
  • We were at Hocking Hills last week.

You have a steep climb into the campground but doable.

The sites are short like in most Ohio State Parks. There will be many sites you can use but you may need to park the truck in the grass or on another empty site. Some state parks are very strict about not parking on the grass but I saw many vehicles on the grass at Hocking Hills.

Sorry I can't recommend a particular site. The one we used was very short but double width. It would have been too short for your RV.

It is a nice park, we enjoyed 5 nights camping. I got in 24 hiking miles while there.

Don't forget to use your Golden Buckeye card if you have one. It will get you a 10% discount on weekends and 50% discount during the week.
