Oregon Coast

Hey Friends,

Where would you stay if you had 3 - 4 weeks on the Oregon Coast from mid July - August. Only interested in the mid to south area as we have already done the north part.

What part of the coast do you like best and why? Please offer your recommendations for RV Parks you like. We have a 45' motor home so we need places that are big rig friendly.

Wife wants to go back to Humbug Mountain State Park. Sites are pretty big. Lower campground has a footpath under the highway to the beach on the other side. Not a lot nearby though.

Oregon Coast is fantastic and the State Parks are some of the best in the country. We like the Newport area because it's pretty close to our home base in Portland - we tend to stay at Beverly Beach State Park which has big sites and lots of trees - within 1/2 hr or so you can find plenty of restaurants, casino, shopping. If you haven't been to Canon Beach that's a must see for many - nice private RV park nearby. Way down South we like Harris Beach SP - worth a look.

Our favorite areas in southern Oregon are Winchester Bay, Bandon and Port Orford.

We like Camp Blanco in Port Orford. It's small and quiet.

+1 on that suggestions. The North RV campground of the Florence Elks is exceptional!

If you're and Elk, look at Florence Elks, campground @ Mercer Lake Rd, about 5 miles N of Florence & about .1 east of Hwy 101--we're there now--Our next will be South Beach State Park just S of Newport--great for rig your size

What part of the coast do you like best and why?

We found out that the OR had so much to offer that we divided the OR coast into thirds and really liked how our travels turned out. This would also work for you because about 1 week in an area and we're ready to move on.

Northern section... is full of history you can reach out and touch, some of the history; so to speak. A very good (newer) book out titled "Astoria" by Peter Stark. Will give you a better understanding of that area before you go. Well worth reading.

Then all the Lewis & Clark stuff and then onto to World Was II. Area is full of history.

Mid section...The ruggedness of the coast, smaller county or community museums well worth the time.

Southern section... After 3 trips to that section, we're still not done yet. Wife keeps finding really old relatives in really old cemetery's. And the family history buff, her Aunt keeps finding more info for her to check out.


Can't recommend any RV parks because we don't go to the coast in the summer. Off season we had no problem getting most any place we wanted. But some places are tight. We're 52 feet overall with TT and wouldn't want to drive to an campground without checking to see if we would fit or not.

Also be careful, there are places (off 101) that have signs saying "NO RV's ALLOWED" or "no oversize trucks" ect. This is not because the people are RV unfriendly, just the opposite, they welcome you. They're trying to keep you out of trouble. But the problem is some places were built for horse and buggy years ago, and not modern RV's. Very narrow etc. But traveling along Hwy 101 like most do, you'll have no problems.

Don't know if you are concerned or not, but fuel prices vary a lot. We found Fred Myers to be about the best as far as plugging them as fuel stop. That way we didn't have to worry about looking to see if we would fit into smaller places along the way. Some are tight but doable IMO.

Any time during your trip you feel you want to make some good time on 101, get that thought out of your head before you even start. It's a great drive and find it hard to do the speed limit sometimes. No big deal and very nice driving, just don't get in a hurry.

Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort (website) in Newport offers beach front sites for ANY size motor home longer than 25'. Sites can be rented by day, week, month or more and many can be rented from owners at a lower cost than the HOA requires. Sites are priced on three different levels depending upon how close to the beach you want to be. The resort offers two pools (one indoor), club house, pickle ball - basket ball court, walking trails, and many activities provided by the HOA.

Newport is the west coast home of NOAA and has a working bay front. Restaurants galore, museums, aquariums, salmon/halibut fishing, crabbing, very nice golf course, miles and miles of empty sandy beaches and many, many tourist shops.

Taking 101 south or north are many places within an hours drive that can spark your interests no matter what they may be.

My favorite spot is Sea and Sand RV Park in Depoe Bay, OR. They have beachfront sites on three levels giving everyone a direct view of the ocean. The rest of the park is in the forest section and is more like a standard RV park. Not sure about 45' though. Must call long in advance for the beachfront sites.

Bullards Beach State camp ground By Bandon. You will need reservations though and also Harris Beach State Park by Gold Beach you will also need reservations. Both places exceptional y nice.
