Again thank you everyone for the info, my wife and I have decided to put this trip on hold until next summer when we can dedicate more time to it so we can plan a stop overnight. I will make note of all this and thanks jplante, I will check out the clarksboro place.

Where do you camp at Ocean City MD? You can stay at Assateague (no hookups) or Delaware Seashore State Park (full hookups) both are Ocean Front Campgrounds
Full timing it since July 2012

jplante...thanks looks nice and I did read there was a dune separating it, as long as we can walk to the beach were good.

Just curious since I see your form my area, did you stop overnight somewhere when you made this trip?

Yes, we're practically neighbors ๐Ÿ™‚

We took our time and stopped twice on the way. We stopped at Fla-Net Park in NetCong NJ and Fredricksburg KOA. Fla-Net was just ok, but close to the DW's niece for a visit. I'd recommend Timberlane in Clarksboro NJ for a good overnight. Open year round, close to I-295. You could probably make the OBX the next day from Timberlane if you started really early and went down 13 to the CBBT.

Well, Ocean Waves is far from roomy. ๐Ÿ™‚ But it's a much more pleasant campground than the KOA, IMO anyway. Grass and trees, but the sites are close together.

Koa is very, very tight. My family really did not care for it. This summer we are staying at Ocean Waves. Might make a day trip north to Kitty Hawk & a day trip south. Other than that I will be doing NOTHING.

thanks for all the great information!
At this point since my wife and I have less than a full week for this trip we have decided to do myrtle beach next summer and this year return to ocean city md. I would never attempt myrle in one shot and do know I will need to stop overnight.

First trip to Myrtle Beach from LI thought I could do it in one haul. What an almost tragic mistake. The light on 501 was quick, my senses dull from 14 hours of towing. Both feet on the brakes and the TV stopped clean in the lane of traffic. After that it was never again. I95 southbound is Fredericksburg KOA. Its 8 hours from LI maybe a little more for you. Its a couple miles off the I95, quiet and peaceful.

Alternatively take 13 down through the DelMarva, cross the Chesapeake bay Bridge and grab 17 to OBX. Toms Cove CG in Chincateague is 8 hrs from LI.

Do yourself and all your going with a HUGE and SAFE favor by laying over someplace, before something really bad happens.

The KOA looked nice but Camp Hatterus CG got the best reviews. We stayed in the oceanfront portion one rig from the entrance to the beach. Would definitely go back.

Since that one big wakeup call, I never did that again and always make a reservation 8-10 hours at the max out and do the same on the return.Hopefully you will seriously consider it and we wont read about you in the news.

We have been to all three over the past decades. Camp Hatteras runs around 100 bucks a night, KOA about the same. Ocean waves runs about 48 to 55 depending on your hook up. CH and the KOA are nice and have a lot for kids to do. OW is quieter and all the pads are cement.
Avon is 15 miles down the road and has a restaurant called the Mad Crabber. That is where we go when we don't feel like cooking ourselves. There are plenty of fish/seafood markets close to any of the three cg's where you can buy whatever you want if you want to cook yourself. There is also a Food Lion in Avon if you need groceries.

All three cg's are on the ocean side and basically a easy walk down to the beach. Depending on the severity of the winter you may have a very wide beach or a very narrow beach depending. Generally if one has a narrow beach the other two are wide.

Travel safe.

Check out Ocean Waves Campground, just down the road from Camp Hatteras, private owners on site and half the price. The Bullocks have a very nice kept campground.

So if you have never done OBX of Myrtle you really should be both at sometime. They are vastly different. OBX is all about the beach, fishing, relaxing. There is plenty though for a week such as Wright Brothers, Jockey Ridge, 3 of 4 light houses, day trip to Ocracoke. Myrtle beach can be all about the beach or it can be as busy as you want to make it with all there is to do. Both locations have great campgrounds for direct beach access. At OBX I would suggest KOA or Camp Hatteras and if you go once NC schools are back in session you will have plenty of space in the campground to spread out. Same for Myrtle if you go back once schools start. In Myrtle we like Lakewood, Pirateland, and Ocean Lakes.

We have made a couple of trips to the OBX from eastern CT, for us we do a stop at the Hagerstown Antietam Battlefield KOA, about 7hrs from CT to the KOA, another 6 or 7 hrs from the KOA to the OBX. which includes stops

lol..no problem, the way were planning this trip you would almost think we were newbies! Would love to find something with direct beach access without having to get back in the truck like we do at ocean city MD. Originally the wife wanted to try myrtle beach we have never been but know many who have. Sounded good, but I couldn't imagine trying to drive that straight through, so that's where we came up with cape hatteras.

after reviewing it all we might just end back at OC MD, but haven't ruled out NC totally, I just need to see if there are truck stops along the way where we could pull into if need be that wouldn't have an issue with a generator running.

when we say we are looking for dining near rodanthe, we are looking for things such as crab shacks...not 5 star dining.

ive done bush gardens VA in one shot before, with a lesser vehicle, not that my new truck is faster, just hoping it tows easier.

Also my wife will do some drive time, believe me we know it isn't a great way to do the trip.

Just wanted to make sure you weren't a newbee on a first trip with a newly acquired RV and planning to drive it like you have your car in the past. If you've done such a trip before, you know why.

I'd point out that Hatteras is a solid 4 hours further south than Bush Gardens.
