overnight stop

heading to Utah 10.26. Need to do an overnight stop somewhere near Vegas. Will probably just be stop, eat, sleep. No need for spot, just stop. Any suggestions? We've never been the Walmart camping type but have stayed in rest area or pulled off into the desert and boon docked. We certainly don't need power, have generator, etc.

mittshel and Dedmiston, thanks for the great suggestions, we overnighted at Sam's Town, then went through Valley of Fire (all full on a Saturday, not surprising) so pulled off onto a side road and boondocked for the night before heading to Zion. Silverton said we could also stay O/N in the designated area when we were just visiting the fish/waterfall display.

GREAT INFO, that's what we were looking for. I'll check that out as well.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks Dave and Betsy, I'll look into the 215 bypass too, then the Sam's town KOA makes sense and thank you so much for the road info. I think we're leaving Burbank about noon tomorrow.

I remember seeing a lot of RV's parked in outer lots at the casinos in years past but in doing some searches it looks like most have stopped allowing that.

Yes. That is the road. We will only go that way from now on. We didn't care about how long it took. Anything to avoid going through Vegas.

Is that the road through the Valley of Fire? We took that detour once just for kicks. It's a beautiful drive, but I don't think we saved any time. I guess everyone should try it once.

Hey Amigo. We've done the L.A. to Utah trip quite a few times. I have two suggestions:

  1. Tough it out and keep going until you get to Mesquite. A couple of the casinos there have dedicated spots where you can camp for free, assuming you spend a little time in the casino in the evening or grab breakfast there before you leave in the morning. I don't remember which casino we stayed at there, but shoot me a PM or an FB message if you're interested and I'll look it up.

  2. Sam's Town KOA in Vegas. In September we stopped there on the way home from Cedar Creek, Utah because we had a good momentum going and didn't want to stop in Mesquite for the freebie stay. I thought it was going to be a dump, but it was actually pretty decent. There were a couple of nice-ish casinos right there and we both did really well. Neither of us ever win in Vegas, but we did really well in the evening and then my wife couldn't resist ducking into the casino again the next morning before we left. She did so well that we ended up staying an extra night in the same spot. Go figure.

Enjoy the Utah trip. It should be heavenly this time of year.

Casino parking south of Vegas, up early and take the bypass to get north of Vegas before the traffic begins to build. When I do that route I stop about 5 pm at the casino and up by 4 am to get beyond Vegas.
