Port Aransas Area, Texas

Any comments about this area for snowbirds. Looking for our first time away this winter.

We were in that area last winter for 2 weeks, end of Jan and the first part of Feb. We liked the area enough, we are planning to go back this winter for a longer stay. Like many have said, last winter was unusually warm, but the two weeks we were there, I do not believe we had the a/c on at all. Humid? Sure, but not the "sit and drip" type of humid we have in MN in July and August.

Been there, done that, prefer something different. The reasons are it can be very windy, morning fog, higher humidity along the coast right next to the water. But the biggest reason was the salt air and salt dew that settled on everything over night. After a few weeks I noticed rust on my rig. I now am in the RGV about 50 miles inland and have no rust problems.

Last Winter was unusually warm and the Corpus Christi area was no exception. Having said that, some years we really appreciate the 5-10 degree warmer weather in the RGV (Rio Grande Valley) of Texas. That last two hundred miles does make a difference.

Nice area, but like any island you'll have a couple cons that you don't have inland. First is humidity, you might have to get a humidifier to feel comfortable in your RV. Second is fog/mist. Some days it might linger around till 10am or so. Third is salt damage. This will be more extensive then you might think so be prepared to either live with it, fix it, or try to combat it.

A very general rule of thumb is after five winters on a TX Gulf island most dealers won't give you trade in value for your rig if you don't do anything to it. If you plan on spending a whole winter ask your neighbors what they do to stay ahead of the salt.

We only had two days of winter in south Texas last year. Fairly warm.

We stayed in Rockport last winter and had great weather. We were about a mile inland with oak trees around the campground so didn't notice much wind at all. It was very humid at night, but it was the warmest winter we have had so far after staying in AL and MS at the gulf coast. Heading to AZ this next winter.

Nice area, a bit cool and windy in Jan and Feb. But definitely nice. Fairly small town. Great fishing too.

Lot's of people prefer to stay in nearby Rockport, Texas.

I love Port Aransas. Small town feel, but just a few minutes away from Corpus Christi which is more of a "city". If you are a beer drinker, there is the Port Aransas Brewery serving up nice craft beer and awesome burgers. There are many good places to eat on the island. One more thing. If you like candy, what I consider the best candy store ever, Winton's Island Candy, is there. Fill up a bag and pay by the pound (or in my case, the ton!).

You are also set up for some great day trips. There are a lot of things to see within a few hours drive.

Yes, my sister lives on the island. It is a great place to visit with a small town atmosphere. There is a free trolley service on the island. You will see lots of pelicans and also dolphins. I love it down there and I think you will too.
