Brian,
I wasnt questioning copyrights, just how they were taken. The glider guys fly out of the Plomosa area and we see them all the time. I have tons of pix from my RC heli around where we camp, but nowhere else. IMO, thats really the only way to project the scope of that event.

Either way, this aint Hollywood. Nice job!

Excellent. I'll keep that in my archives for when the 'what is Quartzsite' question comes up.

That's what I thought, but apparently allot of the training was done in and around Plomosa Road. There are occasional relic hunters sweeping the area that still find things.

We are all correct.Training was held theoughout the desert From Indio
To Needles.Patton did not need Tree huggers permission
however the Camp where they lived was at Bouse

Thanks folks for your constructive criticism!

I honestly have no I idea how the aerial shots were taken as they were submitted by the contributor with no questions asked or offers of information. I admit that I hadn't thought about using a contributors photo being an issue. The photo could have been taken with an RC aircraft, a powered hang-glider, airplane, or even on a balloon I suppose... I won't be using aerial shots again!

I edited the black spot into the video accidentally when I edited out excessive movement I'm sure. I asked my wife to view the finished video and she didn't notice it so I left it which is an obvious error.

As far as the Patton info, here is the response I received from the BLMs Yuma Field Office regarding the Plamosa Road archaeological site...

Brian,

Hi, I'm Tom Jones, the archaeologist here in the Yuma Field Office. There is not a lot known about the Quartzsite signage that appears in the photo that you referenced in your previous e-mail. There are two possible explanations, however. The first is that it was constructed by soldiers associated with Camp Bouse during WWII. The placement of aerial markers was quite common during the training exercises for WWII and the proximity to Camp Bouse favors this explanation. This explanation is also favored because the amount of aerial training during the Patton years was more extensive than in subsequent years. I tend to favor this explanation.

The second explanation involves a training exercise called Desert Strike that took place immediately west of the signage during 1964. A recent survey of the flats adjacent to the signage documented about 300 individual tank tracks, of which about 250 date to the 1964 activity. They were able to document this because the tank tread width changed between WWII and Vietnam. Due to the extensive use of the desert north of Quartzsite during Desert Strike, there is a thought that this could be related to that exercise, but Desert Strike was exclusively a tank training exercise, so, again, I lean toward the WWII Patton exercises associated with Camp Bouse.

I haven't done a lot of research in this area and if I turn anything else up, I will let you know.

Have a great day,
Tom Jones

Since you asked for critique...
There is a couple seconds of black around 2:40. It looks like there was a clip not inserted when this was rendered?

Other than that it's nice! Did you get the aerials from the powered glider guys?

I pretty much agree with all of the above. Very good job. Not too long, not too brief. Quite informative. You even gave a good sense of the terrible traffic.

Thanks for putting this video together and for your time.

It is always a two edged sword, when someone solicits opinions. But in photo forums, much of the information is truly beneficial, if the solicitor truly wants the feedback.

Overall, I liked it and would watch it again. That is always a positive.

The editing was good in providing good transitions from numerous Point of Views. Some of the transitions were abrupt and could be more consistent with the commonality that was shown in the whole of the video. Some of the subjects were just too quick, as in the POV of the Vendors. Lingering can be a personal choice, when it comes to what is included and what is not.

Being conscious of the framed shot being level is really important in a video like this. So many of the shots were not level. This was very distracting. Set your Television at an angle and try watching it. That is what happens when a viewer watches a program that is filmed this way. The eye searches for vertical and horizontal references.

The narration was probably the thing that was the biggest problem, for me as the viewer. In writing and narration there is something called; plain speaking. A good example is when the word; The, is spoken it is spoken as; Thuuh. When some read it out loud, from a script, it often comes out; Theeeea. (This did not occur in your video, but only using the word The, to illustrate a point) To the ear, one catches it quickly. Much of the narration sounded too much like someone was reading a script written in front of them. There are many techniques to get beyond this and often are found in public speaking classes. Also, the tone of the narrator was fairly one tone and the levity, sounded, well, read. Try taking the script, read it, set it aside and then talk it. Standing up, while narrating, is something many use for looping animated movies and is a good technique to try. I liked the narratorโ€™s voice and would encourage the narrator to continue doing projects like this. With practice it will sound more natural, which this one didnโ€™t.

When providing a critique, one should provide a reasonable solution, as well. I made a point to provide this in my critique. Thank you for allowing an opportunity for feedback. You two are very brave people and wonderful in sharing this โ€œshortโ€ with us.

Yes, this short was good for showing Quartzsite and itโ€™s great things and itโ€™s warts, too.

Very, very good. Head and shoulders above anything else I've seen about the Q. And coincidentally I had just spent some time the last couple days going through a bunch of U-tube videos about RVing and the Q so I have some immediate feel for what's out there.

Your video should be referred to anytime somebody out there wants to know what the Q is all about.

While watching I was hoping you would actually show some of the camping areas - which you did. Those who have never been there just can't picture "where you camp" and you video shows it. Maybe someday show all them so everybody will have some idea of what each area "feels" like.

Well done.
