Reno Area State or County Campgrounds

We are in the process of planning our Summer trip. We are planning to spend about a week in the Reno area and would like suggestions on places to stay/things to do. I have searched the forums and not much shows up on this area.

Criteria.
We do not want a pavement parking lot comercial campground. We prefer state parks and private campground that are outside the city limits (rural). A place close to fishing/hiking and feel like we are in the woods. Full hookups, or no hookups dosen't matter.
Thanks for your help.

Washoe Lake State Park and Davis Creek (Washoe County Park) are between Reno and Carson City. Davis Creek looks very much like Tahoe Valley that was posted. Both are close to Virginia City and Tahoe. There are several parks in and around Lake Tahoe and/or Truckee. You might stay in the Tahoe area a few days, then come over to the Reno area for a few days. Both have a lot to offer visitors.

X2 on Washoe Valley. Close to Reno, Carson City, Virginia City, and Tahoe. Davis creek is in the pine trees. Washoe lake is open and without shade.

Things to do in the area.
    National automotive museum Reno
State capitol and Nevada state museum Carson City.
    Virginia City
    Lake Tahoe
    Donner Lake Truckee
Fort Churchill south of Silver Springs
  • Check out PYRAMID LAKE is 33 miles northeast of Sparks via Nevada Route 445 (Pyramid Way. Dick
  • Look into these campgrounds in the area:

Logger Campground (Forest Service) - Stampede Reservoir - close to Reno
Donner Memorial S.P. (CA) - close to Truckee, CA
Fallen Leaf Campground (Forest Service) - Lake Tahoe
Sugar Pine S.P. (CA) - Lake Tahoe
Grover Hot Springs S.P. (CA) - Hot Springs and hiking but 70 mi. from Reno

Also, if your trip is planned around Labor Day, there is a campground in the Black Rock Desert you should visit....Burning Man!!!

  • A few nice FS campgrounds just south of Truckee along Hwy 89 that we like.
  • Long as you plan on being in the Reno 'area' why not just go up to Lake Tahoe 'area' and pick whatever CG you are looking for with things you want to do nearby.

Lots of everything you are looking for.
