renting car in yellowstone area

i know somebody has done this before so i thought i'd ask an experienced person. next june we are going to be camping 1st in yellowstone at Fishing Bridge and then we are heading down to the grand tetons to stay at colter bay. we are staying 3 nights at each place. we are planning on renting a car/van to drive around the park in and leave the rv parked. we are coming from illinois. for ease of pick up/drop off of car, where should i be looking at renting from? thanks, jeff
  • I always rent from Big Sky rentals in West Yellowstone. We always stay at Grizzly RV Resort which is only a block from the campground and an easy walk. We've used them for years and always get a good vehicle. Call a month or so before you arrive to reserve your vehicle. Also if you rent from Big Sky you can leave the car in the lot at Grizzly and the rental people will pick it up saving you a trip back to their office at the end of your stay. AND Grizzly is only a block from the west entrance to the park!
  • Rent fro any nationally based rental such as Hurtz, Enterprize etc. Pick it up on Cody, West Yellowstone or Jackson and return it wherever it's convenient.
  • You're likely going to be going through Cody, Wy from Illinois to the east entrance if you're going to stay at Fishing Bridge. There are several rental companies based at the airport there in Cody, which wouldn't be too far out of your way. Unless you were planning on some other route, otherwise it looks like West Yellowstone has the corner on the market as far as proximity to the park, but then you'd have to traverse the entire park to pick up the car.

Hertz has a rental location in Cody, Wy and you could drop off at Jackson, Wy, and Thrify does too, but their website is being wonky.
  • Avis and Hertz rent cars for touring the Tetons in Jackson, WY. at the airport, and Big Sky Car Rental in West Yellowstone, MT. for touring YNP. Lots of folks fly into both places for their vacations. As far as I know, YNP and GTNP don't have rental facilities inside the parks. From Teton airport to the southern entrance to YNP is about 30 miles, and another 40 miles to the Grand Loop.
  • I'd look in Jackson Hole, maybe the airport. it's not 2 far between the 2 parks. Won't be cheap, nothing in JH is...
