Reservation Question

It seems that most national park campgrounds can only be reserved 6 months in advance. Since we are coming from Alabama to Utah/Arizona, we want to camp in the parks when possible. If I want to stay 4 days in a park, can the reservation be made when day 1 is within the 6 month window or do I have to wait until day 4 is within the window?
  • Yes, as noted, you can reserve a specific site at Watchman. Also some others like Bryce, Arches Devils Garden. Reservation.gov sometimes offers that option.

Other NP CGs may be no reservations at all like Devils Tower NM and Chaco Culture NHS.

Some parks have concession operations, for example Fishing Bridge in Yellowstone, where you reserve space and may not be assigned a site until arriving. That turned out well because one of us was having arthritis pain and difficulty walking, and we were given a site a short walk to the office/laundry.

So it's all over the map.
  • You can reserve specific sites at Watchman if they are available...we did.

Not all national parks are alike with reservations...unfortunately and fortunately.

You may already be doing this, but it's helpful to look at the web page maps and have some site numbers in mind ahead of time and then book when the window opens. For example, in Zion NP Watchman campground, which has electricity, there are some sites along the river that are a short walk to the visitor center and free trams & ranger tram tours. The river sites go fairly fast. On the other hand, in the large Bryce campground with no hookups, it's easier to book.

Can you reserve specific sites at Watchman? Don't ever recall being able to do that at any other NP, although I wish I could...
  • You can book on day 1 of the window for up to the limit the park has.

  • Have you tried making a reservation to see what happens ?
  • surprised no one responded to this. 6 months (or whatever it is) to the first day of your reservation.
