Ricketts Glen State Park PA and 38 foot TH?

Has anyone been to Ricketts Glen with a big rig or seen them there? The website says a few sites can handle up to 40'. But I'd like to hear from folks that say they have done it lol, as the TH is 38' and 13' high....

I'd really like to take the kids here now that we're more effectively set up to dry camp.

Any other PA state parks to recommend?
  • I was at this park in 2013 I stayed in the pet section with my 33 footer. The site was spacious enough for a bigger unit however, i would go up there and check out the sites beforehand. As far as coming from the south the hill has a 18% grade i was towing approximately 12000lbs and creeped at 30mph. The park is a must see especially in autumn.
  • Thanks! Some of those sites in the pictures looked tight, but not awful. I'll have to do a bit more research. I did her that the hill tough - and there is a way around that adds 50 miles. I don't mind the extra miles for peace of mind..
  • Checked our log book and see that we stayed in site number 1. DW did not record other potential site numbers. wxtoad's post does a great job of showing what the sites are like.
  • We were there last fall - Here are some pictures that show how tight most of the sites are. We were glad we were in a 26' rig. And yes, the hill going in from the south is a doosey!

  • Our 5er is 34 ft long, we fit in our site ok. Some site were pretty short and unlevel. I would say that there are some sites that you would fit in, but a lot that you would not. If you go in the off season you would stand a chance of getting a site you could use. DW keeps a log of our trips, and if we think we will be returning to a campground she records site numbers of sites we like. I'll check th elog latter today and see if she recorded any for this campground.
As has been mentioned, if you are coming from route 118 the hill is very steep and long, going up....not much of an issue, but what goes up must come back down. It's doable but challenging for the equipment. I grew up in this area so I am used to the hills and winding roads, and this hill is one of the worst for brakes. It has warrped a lot of rotors.
We loved the park and the hikes, but we love waterfalls, and there are plenty here.
  • I won't bore the natives with my list of PA State Parks. Hit me with a PM if you want to know more. We've done a bunch of them.
  • We were last there over the Labor Day week end in 2007. We had a 32 ft 5th wheel. Had a very difficult time getting the trailer in our site. And I am NOT a novice when it comes to backing large trailers. Some of the sites are very hilly making it difficult to level an RV. There is nothing at the park that would make us want to come back. If I did ever consider going again, I would make a trip in my car and check out every site before I reserved a site. Wish you the best.

  • Make sure you research your directions, there are two ways to get to the Park. We have not been there since we bought our TT in 2004. Our last trip was while we were still tent camping, the hill getting to the park is a very very steep incline. The breaks on our van were hot when we got to the bottom. I could not imagine towing a TT up the hill. For us to go there the back way w/o the hill would double our trip so we have not been back.

Thank being said BEAUTIFUL Park, be sure to hike the trails !
