RV Camp Grounds

I just returned form a 4000 mile trip. I think the RV Parks a getting bad. Not near as nice as they use to be.
I stopped at the Sportsman's camp ground in Lamar, Colo. (Good Sam Park) I have stayed there a number of times.
This time a little girl of about 8 years of age was in there by her self, I asked if I could get a pull-thru with full hook ups. Her reply was yes it would be $37.00. I tried to show her my Good Sam card, she was not interested. I asked her if that 37 dollars was with my discount. She said yes, Then I asked her what was the cost without a Good Sam discount. She said $37.00. I handed her two $20.00 bills and she asked me how much I needed back. I told her 3 dollars and she gave me back the 3 bucks. I then asked what space I would be in, she said any one I wanted. As I drove around I found all the full hook-ups were taken. So I took one with just Water & Electric . I went down to the office and it was closed. As I say the Good Sam doesn't mean any thing in some RV parks.
I stayed at about 8 more on the trip and out of 9 RV parks there were only 2 that I would recommend and stay at them again if had the chance.

You were more fortunate than we; we never found anyone in the office. Certainly one of the worst campgrounds we have stayed in, and the temperature of 107 made things worse.

Yet, it was where we needed to stop. The 50 amp was sufficient for our two air conditioners, water and sewer perfectly adequate, got TV reception over antenna. All good, and I believe the BEST WIFI we have ever had.

I think the Sportsman RV and Horse Motel in Lamar, Colorado is an old KOA which has been allowed to run down. Yet, I'm glad it was there and under our travel plans of this trip I would go back there again.

It was just interesting that this post about this RV park was made just a few days after we were there.

JP Coleman State Park, Iuka, Mississippi. $20.00 dollars a night with full hook up. Bathrooms are extremely clean. The park has two campgrounds. One overlooks the Tennessee river. The other park on on the Tennessee river. The park is beautiful.

As we've revisited various parks over the years, I think it's been pretty evenly split between those that are going downhill, and those that have shown good upkeep and regular improvements, both private and federal/state parks. One area that concerns me a bit, is those parks that are sacrificing RV sites to add more cabins. I can understand the rationale if the demand is there, but I hate to see the RV site count go down.

If you are out of state and want to stay in a Virginia State park beware. The first night is about $40. They moved up their prices to be more in line with commercial campgrounds (so we were told). Most state parks in VA are only water and electric and they charge out of states more. VA State Parks are nice but not at that rate.

You should have asked for the AAA discount. Then it would only have cost $37.

I also found many CG's that sport the Good Sam sign out front once I pulled in only to find out they no longer subscribe to Good Sam.

And the best one is the GS CG's that say the discount is already included in the price. Ya, right.

that and all the fake renewals notices I stopped paying for the GS Club Card. Which now IMHO is just a joke and something to get peoples email addresses for direct mail junk.

This is why we prefer state or federal parks. We went from Pa to Yellowstone and back. We paid $16 a night in Iowa, $19 in Missouri, $23 in Nebraska, $21 in Illinois and $26 in Ohio. All state parks, all had electric hookups ,all were very nice with room between sites. We also stayed at 2 private campgrounds. Both were decent. One was $34 a night for water and electric, the other was $49 a night for full hookups. Both were nice. The first one we were very close to our neighbors. The other had nice separation between sites.
