RV Campground Near a Ski Resort ?

We want to take our college son and friend snow skiing for a day and RV camp overnight. We live in the Atlanta area on the north side. We tow a car. We are willing to drive 4-6 hours or so. Drive up, ski and then drive back.

Can anyone suggest any RV campground with a relatively nearby ski resort? We've been looking at Beech Mtn and Sugar Mtn near Boone, NC but not apparent there are any RV campgrounds nearby and that are open. Some campgrounds are seasonal and are closed during the winter months.

We've only skied once so are not familiar with the places. Any suggestions are appreciated....
  • Honeybear Campground in Boone, NC is open on a limited basis during the winter. They do have FHU sites. This is less than 30 minutes away and Boone is a nice college town (Appalachian State Univ.) with lots of things to do and see.

    Grandfather RV in Blowing Rock
should be closer and seems to be open during the winter.

I have never been to these campgrounds, but Sugar Mountain is a nice place and also has ice skating and tubing run that is fun.

You might also want to check out Ober Gatlinburg for skiing. It is much smaller, but there are plenty of campgrounds in the Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg area that are open all year.
  • Check with the ski resort you want to visit. I know of 1 local slope that has a dedicated RV lot with electric hookup for Rver's skiing on their slopes.

Just a thought -- get a plane ticket to Utah (SLC) and ski REAL snow -- you will love it and will find that Skiing the Greatest Snow on Earth will make you a life time skier, we actually found it cheaper than searching for ICE on the East Coast in the RV (did that for 5 years before I got smart). When the dust settled we found it cost a lot less to fly.

    JMHO,

Thanks for the suggestion but that's too far of a drive for us from Atlanta, at least 9.5 to 10 hours ... thanks anyway ...

Great suggestion, I had seen this before and from the name thought this campground was part of Grandfather Mountain State Park which is further away. This is exactly what we are looking for, many thanks!
