RV Park Suggestions between Dallas and Ozarks

Anyone ever stayed at Choctaw Casino RV Resort or Arrowhead State Park?
These are 2 places I found on our route from Houston area to Ozarks RV Resort on Table Rock Lake in Oakgrove Arkansas. If anyone has any midway or so RV park suggestons it would be appreciated even if we had to divert just slightly. I'm not a big fan of Casinos particularly so if that is all Choctaw has to offer then would like another suggestion. Any info for our trip is appreciated.
  • You might consider Beavers Bend State Park or Hochatown State Park in southeast Oklahoma. You are in a national forest, close to the Talamena Scenic byway and close to beautiful scenery in southwest Arkansas.
  • I've always been fond of Woolly Hollow State Park in Greenbrier, AR. I'm not sure when the fall colors peak there but it would be a good spot if the time is right. Some of the sites would be crowded for your rig but many would work.
  • I wouldn't expect the color to peak until about the 1st of Nov, give or take a weekend. Perhaps a little earlier in Missouri.

Here's the deal about Arrowhead. Rated 8 pts. Concrete pads.

  • Ok, I'm going to somewhat start over. We want to see some fall foliage but not really wanting to go further than Ozark area in Arkansas. Any suggestions? We have to limit the driving time to 9-10 hours from Huntsville, Texas. We have been to Catherine's Landing a couple of times ans really like it there but wanted to try a different area (Ozarks). We are open to any suggestions for fall foliage but keep in mind it can't be so far away that we are on the road more than 5-6 hours per day.
  • Choctaw Casino in Durant is within hearing distance of the highway, the RV park is out in the open but has all the facilities you would normally expect.

Your route is trying too hard to stay on superhighways. When we were making the run from Tulsa to M.D. Anderson every few months for three years, we did not go through Dallas. Getting off I-45 at Huntsville, TX-19 to Paris, US-271 to the Indian Nation Turnpike would cut an hour or two off the trip, depending on what we might have run into on US-75 north side of Dallas. Halfway point on that trip fell between Paris and Hugo. There are a number of decent, not fancy, RV parks on US-271 between Paris and the Red River. Slogging through southern Oklahoma on US-69/75 can be the pits, even with the recent upgrades to take care of casino traffic from Dallas area into Durant.

There are even more direct routes to NE Arkansas from Houston, notably through eastern Texas to Texarkana, I-30 to Little Rock, then US-65 north.

Along your original route, when we would get caught needing to stop around Lake Eufala, our preference was the Checotah KOA, at the I-40 Pierce exit, between the Indian Nation Turnpike/US-75 and US-69 exits. Our RV club would go there once or twice a year, because of how well we were treated. Can't say now, I think it has new owners, new management, since last visit.

Expect water and power hookups at gravel or concrete RV sites in Oklahoma state parks. There will be dump stations on the way in or out, or in another campground nearby if the park has more than one camping area. Oklahoma mixes RV and tent/camper sites. I've not stayed at Arrowhead, there are parks I like better in that part of Oklahoma, but they are not close to your route.
  • We like Fernbrook RV Park in Longview TX. Long level pull thrus. Very nice park.
We have stayed at the Choctaw Casino RV Park and it's also very nice. It's across the street from the casino and you don't have to go into the casino if you don't want to. If you can make it to Texarkana, there are some Corps of Engineers parks that might be open or we like Shady Pines RV Resort for a stopover. Long paved level pull thrus.

    HC 67 Box 57 Canadian, OK 74425

Then on to Oak Grove Arkansas to Ozarks RV Resort
  • Actually I'm at Arrowhead right now. Nice place. The Turkey Flat campground looks like it has been redone within the last few years. Be careful if you make a reservation for a FHU site. The numbering scheme is weird and the online map is wrong.

PM me with any specific questions.
  • Which route are you taking? That's important to know so that you are not given suggestions too far off-route.

What are you looking for in accommodations? FHU? Basic okay?

By giving us this info we can have better suggestions for you.
