San Antonio campgrounds

I have been working on planning our southwest March camping trip and have finished with the National Parks, Monuments, etc. that we plan to visit. On the way back I thought a stop at San Antonio might be good. Does anyone have any suggestions about a campground that would be convenient to the attractions there? We have a Lance truck camper. We don't like big cities, but did want to see some of the things here.
Thanks, Barbara
  • Another vote for Travelers World. We were there this summer and there was a lady in the park that for very reasonable fee came to our RV three times to walk our dog while we were out on a all day tour
  • Thanks for the information. Mostly we are interested in the history and nature and of course, food, and not shopping, etc.

I recommend Travelers World. It is just a little south of downtown right on city bus line with a bus stop right outside the front gate. Would save having to manipulate the TC downtown finding a place to park. And the Mexican food restaurant right across the street is supposed to be very good.

Travelers World is also on the Mission Trail and very near one of the larger and better restored missions if that is of interest.

    X-3 or 4

It is our choice if the military CGs are full and we have never had a bad experience there. The Mexican restaurant across the street is excellent.

We have stayed at Travelers world , which was extremely convenient for downtown. We have also enjoyed staying at Cranes Mill campground on Canyon Lake, but would not want to make the trip into San Antonio each day. Be aware that Texas schools have spring break some time late in March.

Spring Break in the San Antonio area is the second week of March. I imagine others will have Spring break the third week. The last week of March this year is Holy Week and Easter (March 29- Apr 4), when many tourists from Mexico visit San Antonio. That won't affect the campgrounds, but the higher end shopping centers and Riverwalk will see an increase in business.

  • Which San Antonio attractions?

If you mean Sea World and the water parks, then Admiralty RV Resort on the west side of the outer loop is the best location, and a very nice park.

If you mean downtown attractions, then KOA and Traveler's World are close in and convenient to public transportation.

All of these are RV parks, the ones in town more like RV parking lots. If you really mean campground, then that would be out at Guadalupe River SP, out in Spring Branch. On the way out there, you'll see more RV parks, some of them more campground-like than those in town. There are more campgrounds on Canyon Lake, including four operated by the COE, some church camps, and a whole lot of resorts.

Would save having to manipulate the TC downtown finding a place to park. And the Mexican food restaurant right across the street is supposed to be very good, although I have not tried it so can't really say. But I would suggest Casa Rio Restaurant on the Riverwalk if the weather is good, or Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia on west edge of downtown whether the weather is good or not, if you want Mexican food with atmosphere.

There is ample parking downtown near the Riverwalk where you probably would not have a problem finding a place to park if the TC is not too large. I parked my F350 crew cab long bed in two different lots there, but not with a TC on it.

Travelers World is also on the Mission Trail and very near one of the larger and better restored missions if that is of interest.
  • If you want to be near downtown attractions, the KOA and Traveler's World seem to be the two best choices from what I hear from visitors to our city. The KOA is right on a bus line, which is easier than parking downtown.

If it were me, I'd stay at Guadalupe River State Park and commute (but avoid rush hour like the plague!).
